Job Description:
Backstage Library Works is seeking qualified applicants for the role of Library Technician for Stanford University. Under the direction of library staff supervisors, you will be responsible for barcoding boxes, books, and other items, and recording these barcodes in tracking spreadsheets based on their shelf locations. You will also insert flags into items according to specified criteria such as format, size, and type. Additionally, you will pack non-fragile materials, including non-rare books, and help with other rehousing tasks as needed. It is important to maintain productivity goals to ensure the project stays on schedule.
Schedule, Compensation, & Benefits:
This temporary, non-exempt, full-time position entails working 40 hours per week, with one 30-minute unpaid lunch break and two 15-minute paid breaks. The schedule for this role is first shift, Monday through Friday. The position is to start ASAP and is estimated to last approximately 12 weeks.
Compensation for the Library Inventory Technician position is set at $25.00 per hour. Full-time employee benefits include holiday pay and accrued paid time off.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Adhere to proper materials handling guidelines to ensure the preservation of library materials.
- Apply barcodes to boxes, books, and various other collection items.
- Record barcodes on tracking spreadsheets, ensuring accurate shelf location mapping for archival materials.
- Insert identification flags into items based on specified criteria, including format, size, and enclosure type.
- Pack non-fragile materials, such as general collection books, and perform additional rehousing tasks as required.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, production-oriented environment and the ability to adapt quickly and work under pressure to meet deadlines and production goals.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain consistent accuracy and attention to detail while maintaining a very high level of productivity.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member, under pressure, in a highly demanding environment.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accuracy in repetitive tasks.
- Quick learner with the ability to adapt to new tasks.
- Professional attitude and excellent work ethic.
- Reliable transportation for commuting to the job site.
Preferred Additional Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in a related field.
- Prior experience working in a library environment.
- Experience in a production-oriented setting, demonstrating efficiency and meeting deadlines.
- Familiarity with industry accepted materials handling procedures of special library collections.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to push a cart, lift boxes and cartons, books, etc. up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to work in an environment that is dusty and/or moldy.
- Ability to kneel and reach.
- Must be able to stand for many hours.
