PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Hiring Salary: $22.42 - $28.02/hour
**This job announcement is for collecting candidate applications for current and future Arborist Climbing Technicians. Applicants will be contacted only when a position need is identified, and qualifications match the needs of the position. **
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Follows directives of lead worker on daily assignments
-
Prunes, removes, grinds stumps, plants, waters, fertilizes, sprays, and inventories trees
-
Operates machinery needed in the maintenance of trees including aerial lift operation
-
Educates and explains forestry standards of street tree maintenance to citizens
-
Serves as crew leader on volunteer work projects
-
Maintains equipment for daily use
-
Trains tree trimmer apprentices
-
Performs 24 hour emergency storm response and snow removal duties in coordination with other departments
-
Maintains a safe working environment
-
Climbs trees to perform maintenance with using industry accepted rope and saddle techniques
-
Perform basic rigging and lowering techniques
-
Performs other duties as assigned

May also be required to operate heavy equipment

Performs additional duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education:
-
High School Diploma or GED.
Experience:
At least 2 years of green industry experience. At least 14 months of documented climbing tree climbing experience (18 months preferred).
Preferred Qualifications:

ISA Certified Tree Worker
-
USDOL Journeyworker Tree Trimmer
Knowledge:
-
Knowledge of tree biology,
-
Knowledge of tree care practices,
-
Identification of common insects and tree diseases of the front range
-
Tree species identification,
-
Proper handling, and storage techniques for temporary holding of nursery stock
-
Hazards and safety practices common to tree maintenance operations.
-
Identify tree safety risks and select appropriate mitigate strategies
-
Principles, practices, methods, and techniques of tree establishment and structural pruning
-
Principles and techniques of job site safety and maintaining a safe work space
Skills:
-
Pruning and removing trees using industry standard methods
-
Climbing trees using rope and saddle methods
-
Operating Aerial Lift
-
Driving CDL class vehicles
-
Operating typical forestry equipment
-
Maintaining a safe work environment
Abilities:
-
Production focused. Efficiently prunes and removes trees.

Good communicator. Can coordinate activities with other crew members.

Ability to work in unpleasant and sometimes hazardous weather conditions.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees

Communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing

Able to learn technical material quickly and apply lessons consistently

Ability to learn skills and do tasks that require physical endurance
Licenses and Certifications Required:

Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
-
Ability to obtain Class B Colorado Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of hire date.

Required to have completed or begin defensive driving and CPR and First Aid certification within 6 of hire date.
-
Must pass the written portion of the ISA Tree Worker Certification exam within 6 months of hire.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Essential Personnel:

When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Physical Demands:

Moderate to heavy physical work depending on assigned function; Continuous heavy physical work requiring the ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds with or without assistance and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; Continuous walking and standing; frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body motion including pushing, pulling, bending, stooping/crouching, and climbing; continuous hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of tools, equipment, and vehicles; speech communication to give instructions and information to employees; vision to read manuals and gauges and operate equipment; hearing/listening for instructions, troubleshooting, and warning signals.
