Position performs a wide variety of synthetic and process chemistry related duties that include but are not limited to pheromone, kairomone and other semiochemicals R&D and production.
POSITION DESCRIPTION and RESPONSIBILITIES:
PHEROMONE, KAIROMONE & OTHER SEMIOCHEMCALS PRODUCTION R&D (20-30%):
1. Synthesize and conduct R&D experiments related to semiochemicals and natural products that possess stereochemistry.
2. Thoroughly document, optimize, troubleshoot, and develop synthetic/purification protocols.
3. Improve and troubleshoot synthetic methods for commercial insect monitoring.
4. Synthesize semiochemicals routinely on small to large scale batches that is needed for commercial insect monitoring.
5. Perform routine maintenance of lab instrumentation and lab equipment. Good record keeping of analysis documentation and following of strict QA/QC requirements and policies is a must.
- Organize results into reports or presentations that are presented within internal meetings.
7. Sample preparation and analysis of intermediates using GC or other instrumentation as needed.
8. Responsible for chemical planning, ordering, safe storage, use, and disposal of chemicals. Keep the chemical inventory up to date.
9. Responsible for maintaining lab notebooks in a manner which allows others to understand and reproduce each experiment; eg., log critical experimental detail, interpret data and record conclusions and/or suggestions for further experimentation.
SEMIOCHEMCALS PROCESS CHEMISTRY (70-80%):
1. With direction of the Laoratory Manager, conduct R&D experiments related to to process chemistry and the development of chemical processes.
2. Conduct experiments to convert current small batch processes into continuous processes using flow chemistry techniques and equipment.
3. Thoroughly document, optimize, troubleshoot, and develop optimal reaction conditions.
4. Manufacture semiochemicals annually on a large scale as needed for commercial insect monitoring products.
5. Operate and maintain lab instrumentation and lab equipment.
- Attend regular meetings to report on experimental research, results and progress.
7. Sample preparation and analysis of intermediates using GC or other instrumentation as needed.
8. Responsible for maintaining lab notebooks and proper batch record documentation.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D. Synthetic Organic Chemistry with one to two years experience, or a Masters/Bacheleors degree with three to five years of related experience and training with strong and proven synthesis skills. Extensive knowledge of analytical chemistry and instrumentation (GC, GC/MS, HPLC, NMR, etc) required. Experience in continuous processing and flow chemistry is a plus.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITY
Position is accountable for the safe, highly organized, accurate and efficient implementation of all duties. Significance will be given to safety, accuracy, and a degree of creativity and professionalism in reporting and communications. The establishment and maintenance of a safe, clean, 5s environment will be a must.
JOB INTERFACE
This position interacts with all Trécé departments, and periodically with collaborators, contractors, and/or selected vendors as directed by the Manager.
TRAVEL
Some travel may be required to meet with collaborators, attend seminars and training as directed or agreed to by the Manager.
