The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Habitat Biologist 1/2 located in Anchorage!
What you will be doing:
This position is the program manager and lead technical advisor for the streambank rehabilitation program in the Mat-Su Borough. The position identifies, plans and coordinates the development of fish habitat research and restoration projects. This includes surveying and assessing fish habitat, improving fish passage and restoring streambank riparian habitats. The position also assists the fish passage program with the identification and assessment of road stream crossings statewide and the maintenance of the statewide database.

The working conditions you can expect:
The position is located at the Anchorage Fish and Game Office, close to walking and biking trails (especially along the Campbell Creek greenbelt) and home to many research and management personnel from the Sport Fish, Commercial Fisheries, and Wildlife Conservation divisions, and Habitat and Subsistence sections; which allows for the opportunity to develop professional relationships with a diversity of other resource professionals. The position requires an ability to work independently but also within a team environment collaborating with staff in the Division of Sport Fish as well as regional and area offices. The position requires regular travel to the Mat-Su Borough to oversee streambank rehabilitation projects and travel around the state to assess fish passage barriers.

This position requires the ability to work irregular hours and requires travel within Alaska for up to one week at a time on multiple occasions throughout the year.

The successful applicant will be required to carry out field work in rough and uneven terrain and in rivers and streams.

We are looking for a candidate with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Strong project management experience, including planning, budgeting, report writing and grant management.

Knowledge of fish habitat, fisheries biology, riverine ecology, and hydrology.

Experience (1-5 years) carrying out fish or fish habitat related field work.

Ability to act independently and develop creative solutions to accomplish project objectives.

Ability to work cooperatively with diverse stakeholders including but not limited to biologists, engineers, contractors, and the general public.

Habitat Biologist 1:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
- at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
- at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note:
"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
Habitat Biologist 2:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist experience is met by service as a Habitat Biologist 1, Wildlife Biologist 1, or Fishery Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitutions:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
- at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
