Professional Writing Tutor, Academic Center, St. Joseph’s University, Brooklyn
The Academic Center at SJNY is seeking to hire 1-2 professional writing tutors. Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. Though the emphasis is on experience in tutoring essay writing in English, additional background in tutoring Spanish and/or French is desired, but not required.
Job Description
Writing Tutors are highly skilled in writing; many have advanced degrees and many hours of teaching experience. They must be personable and adept at assessing each student’s individual needs. They must be culturally sensitive, supportive, and actively engaged. Appointments with individual students may involve many different steps in the writing process, from brainstorming and outlining to focusing solely on crafting a solid thesis statement. Other students require more help with the mechanics of language, as they may be writing in a second or third language. Thus, leading candidates will have worked with a diverse array of students at different levels of comprehension and mastery of writing. The Academic Center also values candidates with diverse liberal arts backgrounds who are able to assist with many types of academic writing. (Tutors might spend one hour helping a student outline an ethics essay and the next hour working with a student on source analysis for a history paper).
Professional tutors have set hours in the Academic Center, with a normal shift lasting 5-6 hours. (The Academic Center is open from 9:00-8:00 M-TH with shorter hours on Fridays and Saturdays). During their shifts, tutors may perform the following activities:
- One-on-one tutoring
- Conducting a themed workshop
- Designing and writing up a workshop on a topic they or another person in the SJNY community wishes to see presented
