REFERENCE & ADULT SERVICES LIBRARIAN
Working under the direction of the Chief Information & Adult Services librarian, the person in this position is responsible for providing excellent customer service to library patrons of the Reference Department. Additional duties include, but are not limited to, assisting in the procurement and update of all library reference materials and adult fiction books, monitoring public computer use, managing the library’s special collections, developing library presentations for adults, as well as researching and preparing training materials for library staff. A master’s degree in library sciences from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school is required. A thorough knowledge of reference services, computer use and technology as it relates to library science is also required. The person in this position must be an effective communicator with the library patrons, as well as with library staff.

A JOB TITLE: Reference & Adult Services Librarian
DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Legislative Department/Board of Library Trustees Division
PAY GRADE/HOURS: Grade T3A / 35-hour work week
UNION: Local 3851/Professional and Technical
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Chief Information & Adult Services Librarian provides excellent customer service to patrons in the Reference Department in compliance with the library’s policies and procedures, and does related work as required.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provide direct service to patrons in the Reference Department. Tasks include: responding to patron requests for information, assisting patrons in the selection and location of library materials, and processing interlibrary loans.
· Assist in collection development and weeding of library materials.
· Assist in the selection of new adult fiction materials.
· Monitor patrons using the public computers, provide troubleshooting with computer equipment, software and printing as needed.
· Assist in the management of special collections, including local history and microfilm.
· Assist in developing and presenting programming for adults.
· Assist in the creation and distribution of public relations materials for adult programs and services as required.
· Research and prepare appropriate training materials for staff and patrons.
· Attend workshops and professional meetings as appropriate.
· Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school; knowledge and understanding of basic principles of library organization, procedures, tools, goals and philosophy of service; general knowledge of reference services; ability to use computers and technology easily in wide range of library applications.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND PERSONAL QUALITIES: Thorough knowledge and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and oral skills. Ability to meet people easily and to participate in the broader library community. Ability to coordinate all departmental activities within the total library program; flexibility, tact, initiative, and excellent judgment.
