The School Nurse (Licensed Practical Nurse, LPN) provides health services to assist students and staff in achieving and/or maintaining optimum health through education, examinations, and guidance.
Key Responsibilities and Expectations:
- Reviews childrens’ annual medicals. Ensures that all vaccines are up to date.
- Identifies, monitors, and manages students with chronic disease and disabilities, and documents the services provided in accordance with orders and care plan.
- Provides emergency crisis nursing care for physically and/or psychologically ill and injured students.
- Responsible for the assessment and management of children with minor emergencies, as well as those possessing life threatening emergencies, such as anaphylactic allergies, asthma, seizure disorder, as well as various genetic disorders.
- Manages all emergency medications (epi pens, inhalers, etc.).
- Responsible for enforcing all Covid protocols and regulations per the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS).
- Provides counseling and guidance to students, parents and staff regarding health-related issues.
- Frequently communicates with parents and staff regarding health related issues.
- Maintains thorough and comprehensive health-related reports and incident reports, and ensures compliance with policies and regulations.
- Attends 504 and IEP meetings to provide medical expertise, if requested.
- Maintains required certifications and licenses; attends trainings as required.
- Identifies/monitors health issues.
- Maintain and reorder supplies for health office.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
- Required to attend scheduled shift during regular business hours as mandated, and work schedule follows school calendar.
Skills, Education and Experience
- Graduate of a Licensed Practical Nursing program from vocational or other technical school.
- Minimum of 2 years of school nursing, pediatric nursing, or related nursing specialty recommended.
- Unrestricted Licensed Practical Nurse License in the State of NY.
- Certification in CPR/AED and Responding to Emergencies (RTE) required.
- Work experience in a Pre-K environment. Experience as a School Nurse preferred.
