Bed Control: Oversees Bed Placement and reviews all Admission orders from all areas of admission entry point throughout the whole UHealth system (i.e., ED, OR, IR, intra-facility transfers/admissions, Internal, Cath Lab, Direct Admissions, etc.)
Ensures appropriate unit/bed assignment of patients based on a detailed review of admitting order sets, medications/interventions/infection isolation ordered, and Level of Care (LOC) requested; match patient acuity and care needed to the Nursing skill set provided on each particular floor/unit.
Reviews transfer orders for LOC changes to expedite/ensure appropriate floor/unit assignments while communicating with the Interdisciplinary Team
i.e., if the stability of a patient on a Medical/Telemetry unit is questioned or a “Rapid Response/Code” is called, and the patient subsequently needs ICU LOC—Bed Control coordinates (in conjunction with the ICU Free Charge Nurse) the proper and timely triage of the patient to an ICU bed for higher level of care
Reviews daily OR and Cath Lab schedule to ensure bed availability of known surgical admissions that will necessitate an inpatient/extended recovery stay post-operatively; coordinating with the Charge Nurses of surgical units evening prior/day of to ensure bed availability/appropriate placement of OR patients
Coordination of add-on admissions/bed placement of patients coming from Interventional Radiology (IR)/other procedural areas that need extended recovery for observation, pain management and/or bleeding precautions (often a daily occurrence)
Facilitates intra-facility transfers/admissions for those patients that require higher level of care/extended recovery pre-operatively or post-operatively coming from known UHealth intra-facilities i.e., Bascom Palmer, Sylvester, or Lennar
Reviews all Direct Admissions provided on the “Daily Admission Log” (including UMHC (Sylvester) Direct Admissions) the afternoon prior to the expected date of admission to ensure appropriate bed is held for the upcoming admission
Ensuring all necessary protocol/requirements have been followed i.e., auth approved, admitting orders in, etc. If census allows, bed held by Bed Controller for known Direct Admission evening prior
Opens and closes all overflow ED units in events of high critical census, ensuring all Interdisciplinary Team members are aware, including proper email communication sent regarding opening/closing of such unit and staffing/Leadership is adequately prepared; documents all historical opening and closing of units in Box.
Coordinates room preparation and bed assignments for all HPPs in conjunction with EVS, Staffing, Nursing Leadership and Administration
Escalation of special staffing requests i.e., 1:1 sitter, Baker Acted patients, etc. with Staffing Coordinators
Communicates blocked rooms to Plant Ops/Telecom/Biomed, etc. to ensure rooms/issue are properly addressed
Communicates all negative pressure room availability Q shift (nightly)
Records all ED Admission >30 min delays (i.e., LOC incorrect, lack of Droplet Precaution orders) in Box and escalates to appropriate ED or Lab staff to facilitate assistance in the delay.
Coordinates and communicates room blocks for hospital-wide improvement projects i.e., Remote Sitter Installation, Window-Sill projects
