SC State University Public Service and Agriculture (1890 Research and Extension) is seeking to hire a research technician for the Climate-Smart Agriculture project. The Research Technician (RT) will be part of a multi-disciplinary research group consisting of the post-doctoral fellows, graduate/undergraduate students, Project Implementation Team (PIT), and SC State 1890 extension agents when required.
The Research Technician will work closely with the post-doctoral scientist(s) and assist with setting up experiments; collecting, maintaining, and analyzing data; collaborate with climate-smart extension agents, and coordinating graduate and undergraduate student work activities. Specific functions include measurement, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of soil carbon sequestration and emission and other greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, and N2O) associated with conservation standard practices specified in the grant at selected farm locations across South Carolina and SC State Research and Demonstration Farm at Olar, SC.
Specific job description/duties
· Applicants should be eager to work and be comfortable with both physical work in the field and indoor/laboratory conditions.
· Processing samples in the lab such as soil extractions, chemical analysis, plant grinding, and root washing as we develop the program.
· Assisting the research team and farm team with planting, harvesting, field maintenance, pesticide and disease management, seed inventory and other management practices.
· Plant maintenance in the field may involve some weekend/holiday responsibilities.
· Data analysis – entry of data into spreadsheets, data sorting, data processing
· Data reporting using spreadsheet, document, or presentation formats.
· Assisting with literature review and preparation of conferences and meeting documents for the student interns and Associate Research Scientist.
· Assist with preparing students to present at conferences/symposia.
Prior experience in an agricultural/plant science field is preferred.
Qualifications: Education/Experience
BS or MS degree holder with experience and authority in the subject matter of the research project in question.
Skills/Abilities
Subject knowledge and oral/written communication skills to discuss and documentresearch progress. Ability to work independently, accurately and to problem solve technical and methodological issues that arise during the research. Ability to work in team setting and supervise undergraduate students.
