Job Description: Academic and Mental Health Counselor
Position Overview:
The Academic and Mental Health Counselor plays a critical role in supporting the academic, social-emotional, and mental well-being of students within the school community. This position focuses on providing individual and group counseling services, academic guidance, and crisis intervention to help students achieve academic success and develop essential life skills. The counselor collaborates with teachers, parents, and administrators to create a supportive and inclusive school environment that fosters growth, resilience, and positive mental health for all students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Individual and Group Counseling:
- Provide confidential counseling services to students facing academic, personal, social, and emotional challenges.
- Conduct assessments to identify students’ strengths, needs, and concerns, and develop personalized intervention plans.
- Facilitate support groups and workshops on topics such as stress management, coping skills, and interpersonal relationships.
- Academic Guidance and Support:
- Assist students in setting academic goals, developing study skills, and improving organizational and time management abilities.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to address academic concerns, develop intervention strategies, and monitor student progress.
- Coordinate with school staff to implement accommodations and modifications for students with learning differences or disabilities.
- Crisis Intervention and Mental Health Support:
- Respond promptly to crisis situations, providing immediate support, intervention, and referrals as needed.
- Collaborate with school administrators, counselors, and external agencies to develop and implement crisis response plans.
- Advocate for students’ mental health needs and promote awareness of mental health issues within the school community.
- Collaboration and Consultation:
- Work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and administrators to address student needs, develop intervention plans, and monitor progress.
- Consult with school staff on student behavior, academic performance, and social-emotional development, providing guidance and resources as needed.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, IEP meetings, and student support meetings to ensure coordinated and holistic care for students.
- Professional Development and Outreach:
- Stay updated on best practices, research, and trends in academic counseling, mental health, and education.
- Participate in ongoing professional development activities, workshops, and training opportunities to enhance counseling skills and knowledge.
- Collaborate with community organizations, mental health professionals, and local agencies to provide resources, referrals, and outreach services to students and families.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, or related field.
- Valid state licensure or certification as a school counselor or mental health professional.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of counseling experience in an educational setting.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of counseling theories, techniques, and evidence-based practices related to academic and mental health counseling.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and culturally responsive learning environment for all students.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $52,048.27 - $80,000.00 per year
