In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property responding to fires using firefighting and rescue techniques, equipment and extinguishing agents utilizing trained knowledge of firefighter theory and tools; contaminated and/or hazardous areas requiring the full performance of firefighting tasks including building ventilation, fire extinguishing, emergency medical service(s) (EMS) apparatus operation, protective performance techniques as needed in the event to protect life and property. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and Hazardous Materials Operations certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M
AND a CURRENT State or National Registry EMT Certification Card indicating a future expiration date.
The following certificates as a Firefighter (Basic Life Support) below must be obtained with in one (1) year of appointment:
- Airport Firefighter within one (1) of appointment
- Driver/Operator Pumper within one (1) year of appointment
- Driver/Operator Aerial within one (1) year of appointment
