The ideal Associate Director candidate is someone with deep client and project leadership experience in the energy efficiency, sustainability, or environmental sectors. Bonus points if you've worked on behalf of states or local municipalities and understand benchmarking and building performance standards.
Responsibilities
Program Management
- Lead all aspects of government client and program management. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring all project deliverables meet timelines, adhering to the program scope, resolving client issues promptly, leading project meetings and setting agendas, delivering status reports, etc. Client dependent, the Associate Director may function as the primary program lead or provide oversight of an acting Program or Project Manager.
- Own, forecast, and manage client program budgets in order to meet staff utilization targets and ensure project profitability. Review staff time billed to projects and invoices for accuracy. Proactively develop and implement plans to address budgetary or profitability issues, where relevant.
- Work with clients to plan and develop contract scope, deliverables, required resources, work plan, budget, and project schedules.
- Regularly report on program status, issues, and financial metrics to leadership.
- Demonstrate initiative in identifying and tracking project risks and roadblocks. Proactively present options and recommendations for resolution.
- Provide thought leadership and policy development support to clients. This includes, but is not limited to, industry or landscape analysis, best practices, and strategic recommendations.
- Develop and present client deliverables, including but not limited to, program and training materials, communication plans, reports, public documents, and financials. Ensure they are accurate and high-quality.
- Generate and analyze various program or customer statistic reports using Touchstone IQ software, Microsoft Excel, and other related tools.
- Coordinate with colleagues to identify cross-functional resource needs and dependencies in order to facilitate prioritization across multiple projects.
- Receive, prioritize, and manage the submission and resolution of software bugs or feature requests identified by clients. Ensure Program Director and Software Director are clear on priorities, risks, and blockers.
- Develop and nurture deep client relationships through virtual and in-person interaction. Identify strategies for soliciting and addressing feedback.
- Proactively identify and communicate organic growth or sales opportunities to leadership. Subsequently, recommend and implement strategies for securing new business.
Customer Success
- Manage and oversee the help center operations for multiple local and state government energy benchmarking and building performance standard programs across the country on behalf of Touchstone IQ products.
- Meet contractual obligations for each client, including but not limited to turnaround time on all correspondences, compliance rates goals, reporting, and outreach commitments.
- Achieve superior client satisfaction and retention rates.
- Elevate opportunities to enhance the customer service experience with a focus on continual team improvement.
Staff Management
- Hire, train, and supervise staff who provide phone, email, and virtual support to building owners and managers who are tasked with complying with building benchmarking and performance standards programs.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to Program Managers, Project Managers, Energy & Sustainability Consultants, and Customer Service Representatives by fostering a positive team environment and providing direction in ambiguous situations.
- Plan for and regularly monitor employee professional development to help achieve individual and team goals. Identify and implement team-wide training or process improvements to drive efficiency and cohesion.
- Conduct regular check-ins with staff and semi-annual performance evaluations. Encourage employees to share feedback on management and/or team process improvements.
Company Support
- Provide thought leadership and ad hoc support for Touchstone IQ or Government-specific initiatives. These include, but are not limited to, documenting processes, developing SOPs and best practices, creating client and internal onboarding and training materials, supporting business development, compiling industry and competitive research, creating marketing content, providing software improvement recommendations and conducting quality assurance testing, and conducting potential customer outreach.
- Stay up-to-date on industry trends and news, sharing this internally and with clients as appropriate.
Qualifications/Competencies/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, public policy, environmental science, engineering or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- 10+ years of experience managing complex city, state, utility or corporate energy management programs.
- Proven ability to prioritize and manage time across multiple projects according to outlined scopes, budgets, and timelines.
- Track record of effectively managing program budgets, identifying and implementing efficiencies to increase company profitability, and maximizing staff utilization.
- Track record of successfully supervising multiple direct reports with a mix of experience levels – from entry-level staff to mid-level professionals, with an emphasis on mentoring and developing staff.
- Extensive knowledge of building energy policy, energy concepts, and the ability to educate others in a practical and technical manner.
- Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills including the ability to actively listen, proactively problem solve, and be highly responsive to the needs of our multi-functional internal team and all customers with whom you interact.
- A growth mindset — someone who possesses intellectual curiosity, coupled with an innovative and entrepreneurial drive, is able to adapt to change and incorporate constructive feedback.
- Demonstrated ability to represent the company with a high degree of professionalism.
- Proven experience using Microsoft Tools – Word, Excel, andOutlook.

- Comfortable exercising good judgment and using analytical skills in ambiguous situations.
- Outstanding attention to detail combined with the ability tosee the big picture.
- Ability to learn quickly; proactive in seeking out information when necessary.
Benefits
Compensation is dependent on experience with a base salary ranging from $115,000-$135,000 based on qualifications and experience. Benefits include healthcare and dental insurance, parental leave, a Denver RTD EcoPass, a hybrid work schedule, paid holidays, vacation and sick days as well as a matching 401k package. We can offer relocation assistance to Denver for this position.
