Under the supervision of the Prevention Supervisor, the Prevention Specialist will support and participate in community initiatives that strengthen school programming and school connectedness, focus on student health and well-being, and strengthen families and neighborhoods. Responsible for working with the school, community and businesses. This will include the implementation, development, and management of community and schools’ activities, events, programs, and services that lead to healthy and successful children, strong families, and a thriving community. The Prevention Specialist can provide on-site substance misuse prevention services, including small group programming, and individual brief programs. The Prevention Specialist will facilitate communication and coordination of activities, and establish, build and maintain relationships to support the integrity of community and school projects.
Routine work hours overlap to the school day (before and after school). Special events or projects may take place during the early evenings and/or on a weekend.
This position is a 3 days a week, 24 hour per week position.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
Required Bachelors Degree
Field Education, Sociology, Psychology, Public Health, Social Services, Human Services, and Social Work, Community Health or related field.
EXPERIENCE
· Preferred: Substance misuse and/or public health prevention with competency using Evidence Based Programs/Strategies. Work with community coalitions/committees. Additional acceptable experience: youth counseling in mental health or substance abuse service environment
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with children, students, and families is required
- Must have the ability to demonstrate significant knowledge of positive youth development, asset development, risk reduction, and protective factors
REQUIRED CREDENTIAL / LICENSE
Required Valid NYS Driver’s License
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
· General computer skills, including keyboard and mouse operations; visual and/or auditory capacity.
· The employee may lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally carry up to 30 pounds
WORK ENVIRONMENT
· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is expected to adhere to strict policies/regulations relative to being in a tobacco-and alcohol-free workplace.
· Work is performed in a school and within the community; working with students, families, school staff, and other adults
· Position requires travel across Cattaraugus County.
SKILLS
· Experience with and ability to show examples of past successes developing and facilitating presentations and programs with diverse groups including children, teens and adults
· Knowledge of and keenly interested in the public health approach to reducing alcohol, tobacco, and other drug related problems
· Excellent group facilitation, leadership development and dynamic public speaking skills
· Ability to build relationships with children of various ages and their parents/guardians
· Must have strong technology skills, good record keeping and time management skills.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills and familiarity with computer software such as Microsoft Office are a must.

RESPONSIBILITIES
May perform all or part of the following duties
· Coordinate scheduling with schools/partners, plan and implement substance abuse prevention strategies, and programming with fidelity including: Too Good For Drugs, Teen Intervene
- Plans and directs efforts to involve students and engage families in the community and school activities.
- Participates in capacity-building activities.
· Adapt existing trainings and content to meet the needs of an audience
· Collect statistics and relevant data to generate reports and to meet deadlines as needed
· Provides education and support to the community and schools for promoting healthy lifestyles and healthy choices
· Acts as a resource person in substance abuse education. Selects, develops and maintains educational resources on health and wellness topics for dissemination
· Plans exhibits and health fairs to motivate their audiences to understand health issues so they can act in ways that promote good health
- Asset development (risk reduction and protective factor) activities
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
