POSITION DESCRIPTION
TEACHER
SPECIAL EDUCATION—SECONDARY FUNCTIONAL SKILLS
REPORTS TO: Building Principal (s)/Director of Special Education
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Michigan Certification to teach cognitively impaired students OR enrolled in a Cognitive Impairment (CI) Program.
2. Ability to work with classroom teachers when appropriate inclusion and mainstreaming can be accomplished.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist the building administrator in screening referrals for special education service and help make the appropriate referrals.
2. Develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates the annual instructional educational plans for the identified special education student.
3. Provide a basic core program for special education students consistent with state education code requirements.
4. Coordinate and supervise community based instruction involving special education students. 5. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers who have special education students in regular classes, interpreting the abilities and disabilities of these students to the entire staff and assisting the student with regular class assignments.
6. Confer frequently with parents and professional staff members regarding the educational, social, and personal problems of such students. Involve parents in the education of their children.
7. Assist other professional staff members in resolving the unique psychological or disciplinary problems of each student.
8. Assist in screening, evaluating, and recommending placements of applicants in the schools' special education program.
9. Assist special education students in making realistic assessments of their abilities and in establishing educational and occupational goals in keeping with these abilities.
10. Provide motivation to students who have a short attention span.
11. Keep attendance records and all other records pertinent to the special education program for state reports.
12. Participate in transition planning and preparation for secondary experiences.
13. Take responsibility for professional growth and development.
14. Perform other duties as assigned.

Pay: $41,111.00 - $71,533.00 per year
