Direct Care Workers provide support to individuals with barriers related to social, cognitive, emotional, and physical functioning. Direct Care Workers may be providing services that include appropriately managing aggressive behaviors ranging from personal insults and threatening behavior, up to and including physical aggression and sexually inappropriate behavior. The services may take place in the residential program at TBI Residential Rehab and in the community, based on the social, emotional, and physical needs of the person served. Direct Care Workers must adhere to all policies and procedures of TBI Residential Rehab, including but not limited to, State Licensing regulations, and CARF Accreditation Standards of Care.
AREAS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists persons served with personal care, supervision, and protection.
2. Provide personal care assistance which includes bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, walking and other necessities to maintain personal hygiene.
3. Promotes health and safety of all persons served including following all State Executive Orders, CDC guidelines and TBI Residential Rehab’s policies and practices related to communicable diseases.
4. Assists with nutritional support including, meal preparation, safe food handling, meal planning and grocery shopping.
5. Assists persons served with mobility needs including, transfers, use of equipment, safe ambulation.
6. Follows basic infection control procedures for each person served.
7. Attends medical appointments with the persons served and accurately reports the results of the appointment.
8. Completes housekeeping tasks as needed to maintain a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for the residents.
9. Identifies emergency situations quickly and follows emergency procedures in the event of any incident, injury, or significant change in individual’s condition and or behavior.
10. Assists with routine health care activities such as, medication management, diet restrictions, use of equipment, regular weights and vitals and exercise.
11. Performs care according to the written plan of care.
12. Prepares and submits paperwork required.
13. Performs additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Experience: Preferred six months experience in direct care or pursuing education in health care related field.
B. Skills & Functional Abilities:
1. Able to read, write, and follow written and verbal direction.
2. Able to communicate verbally in a manner that is understandable to the residents served.
3. Basic writing skills including, correct grammar, legibility, and able to accurately communicate information through writing.
4. Able to lift, turn, and transfer person served weighing up to 150 lbs. with or without accommodations.
5. Stoop, bend, kneel and carry items weighing up to 10 lbs.

D. Education: High school diploma or GED equivalence preferred.
E. Transportation:
1. Have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance with no restrictions as applicable.
2. Must have reliable transportation to and from work.
3. Employees providing transportation services are subject to random alcohol and drug screening.

G. Other: Complete pre-employment testing requirements including background check, fingerprinting, reference checks, current TB test, and physical (if applicable). Reasonable suspicion testing, also known as for cause drug or alcohol testing, will be performed when management have evidence or reasonable cause to suspect an employee of substance use.
WORKING HOURS and ENVIRONMENT:
Regular working hours vary based on the needs of the person served.
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- May require long periods of standing, bending and moving.
- Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds at times.
