The Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center (NVJDC) Food Service Workers/Cooks prepares food for residents, teachers, administrators, and visitors in accordance with the policies and procedures outlined by the Standards for Juvenile Residential Facilities. Food Service Workers/Cooks assists with inventory control and the maintenance of kitchen facilities and equipment. The Food Service Worker is classified as essential personnel. Supervision is received from the Food Service Manager.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:
- Prepares a large number of meals daily;
- Uses accepted methods of food preparation, equipment maintenance, sanitation, and safety practices;
- Applies assembly line and time motion concepts to the preparation of meals;
- Assists with storeroom inventory control and the maintenance of supply usage records;
- Assists with keeping work areas and equipment clean at all times;
- Assists in verifying deliveries, and in safely storing food and supplies;
- Measures and serves portions for special diets;
- Assists in menu preparation;
- Attends staff meetings;
- Performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Some knowledge of acceptable food preparation; some knowledge of principles of sanitation and safety in food service operation; ability to interpret and follow oral and written instructions; ability to lift and maneuver heavy objects, equipment, and supplies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of experience in food preparation as a cook, and completion of high school level courses in arithmetic and English; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is a part-time position not to exceed 20 hours per week. Must be available for holidays and weekends.
A valid certificate in food service sanitation is preferred. In addition, you must be able to successfully pass a medical examination, drug test, and the following background checks: Virginia State Police, Child Protective Services, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
