About Us: Kahilu Theatre is a vibrant multidisciplinary arts organization located in the historic town of Waimea (Kamuela) on Hawaii Island. Our facility features a 484-seat main stage, a 75-seat black box venue, two art galleries, and a cutting-edge film program producing original content for Kahilu.TV. We host a dynamic presenting season, community rentals and events, and comprehensive art education programs for youth. Position: Full-Time Development Director
Role Overview: We are seeking a passionate and experienced Development Director to drive our fundraising efforts and support Kahilu’s long-term financial sustainability. This full-time position requires a strategic thinker who can manage grants, cultivate major gifts, and spearhead innovative fundraising campaigns. Our current operating budget is $1,600,000. Contributed revenue is approximately 70%.
Key Responsibilities:
● Grants Management: Oversee the organization’s grants program including proposal writing, budgeting, and administration. Ensure timely acknowledgment and reporting.
● Fundraising Initiatives: Enhance Kahilu’s financial sustainability through major gifts, individual and corporate giving programs, naming opportunities, endowment, and planned giving campaigns.
● Donor Relations: Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board to identify and develop new funding sources, including online giving and social media campaigns.
● Database Management: Maintain and update the Spektrix Box Office and CRM system, ensuring accurate and up-to-date donor information. Generate reports for the Board and staff.
● Pledge Tracking: Monitor outstanding annual and campaign pledges and sponsorships.
● Strategic Planning: Identify appeal and income opportunities throughout the year and provide regular status reports on fundraising activities.
● Communications: Create renewal solicitation letters and annual fund solicitation lists. Produce gift acknowledgment letters and donor cards.
● Event Support: Assist in the organization and execution of special events, and participate in friend-raising, fund-raising, and stewardship events.
● Donor Cultivation: Attend performances, concerts, donor dinners, and other programs to engage and cultivate donors.
Qualifications:
● Experience: 3-5 years of demonstrated fundraising experience, preferably within arts organizations.
● Technical Skills: Strong computer proficiency required; experience with Spektrix or similar database software preferred. Proficiency in Excel is required.
● Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
● Organizational Skills: Exceptional attention to detail, follow-through, and ability to prioritize multiple demands. This includes clerical responsibilities such as maintaining accurate records, organizing and filing documents, managing schedules, and handling correspondence.
● Teamwork: Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
● Donor Relations: Ability to understand and support donor needs to sustain relationships.
Working Conditions:
● Environment: Typical office setting with extended periods at a computer workstation. Some duties may be performed off-site or outdoors. Physical tasks may include standing, walking, using hands, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
● Schedule: Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed.
● Travel: Local travel required; must possess a valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle.
Compensation: Salary range: $65,000 - $75,000 annually. Kahilu Theatre offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, and generous paid time off (PTO). Bonus potential after the first year.
