The Peer Mentor (PM) will work with mentees to assist them with school and cultural integration. The PM will work with 2-3 mentees to provide academic support, social support, college and career planning, and attend school or community events with them. The PM will work closely with the Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains (LFSRM) staff to coordinate schedules, track and report hours, help with LFSRM events and office tasks, and meet regularly to discuss any challenges and successes along the way. The PM will also be required to attend workshops regarding workplace expectations and college and career readiness.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- PM will meet with mentees at least 4 times per month for the duration of the school year (September-May).

Meetings can include but are not limited to:
- Academic support through tutoring before, during, or after school

Attending social events at school such as sporting events (home games for Football, Soccer, Volleyball, etc.), dances, club meetings, etc.

Discussing college and career readiness and goal setting

Coordinating with families to attend school conferences or other events
-
Getting together outside of school to attend community events, cultural celebrations/ holidays, or to simply hang out

One meeting per month must include a check in with the mentees family to make sure they are doing well, see if they need assistance receiving services from LFSRM staff or have any questions about their student or the mentorship program.

PM will assist LFSRM staff with various office tasks such as organizing and keeping inventory of the storage unit and helping to file paperwork, learning about the organization and the different roles of each employee, and other tasks as assigned

PM will track and report hours regularly

Hours, activities, and feedback will be entered timely on a shared google spreadsheet

PM will attend 1 workshop and/or activity per month

Career readiness preparation

Extra time for academic support will also be provided

Optional work during summer camp
-
PM can extend their work into June by providing support to LFSRM school staff during summer camp. Activities for this include but are not limited to:

Helping to set up and clean up activities
-
Helping to lead craft or nutrition activities with camp attendees
-
Helping to record attendance, transition between classrooms, and maintain safety and fun for all participants

Time commitment each month is a minimum of 8 hours and a maximum of 20 hours total.

2 hours per week for mentoring with a max of 5 hours per week, and 2 hours per month for workshops provided by YEC

At least 75 hours per semester (150 hours total) will be required to get school credit

PM will work to create a schedule that works for themselves and their mentees to meet weekly while allowing time for academics and other extracurricular activities

Schedule changes must be reviewed and approved by LFSRM before the week begins
- PM will consistently report hours and activities on time

Submit weekly updates through a shared google spreadsheet on activities performed with mentees, total time spent with them, and any challenges or successes they're facing

Work with mentees to establish and maintain a schedule for meetings

Use various forms of technology such as google spreadsheets, emails, and phones to perform tasks, communicate, and learn from

Independently problem solve challenges that may arise and maintain communication about these challenges

Communicate if the family of mentees need any services that LFSRM can provide - school supplies, diapers, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS

High school Junior and Senior students who have been in the US for at least 3 years, are in good standings with grades and attendance

Strong oral and written communication skills in English

Demonstrates commitment to the mission, values and vision of Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains
OTHER
- Career Exploration Internship Program elective credit for school - 0.5 credits

Work experience and training on professional skill development, workplace expectations, and a job reference by completing the mentorship

Direct coaching on college preparation and the opportunity to attend college campus tours

Direct coaching on career readiness and the job application processes

All lessons will have snacks provided and extra time for tutoring and connecting
