POSITION SUMMARY
The Unit Manager (Resident Care Manager) position is responsible for supervising nursing staff on the assigned unit and for planning, coordinating and supervising resident care services, including those services provided by other clinical and support services departments.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Know the history, diagnoses, functional conditions, and overall goals of care for each resident on the assigned unit.

Attend nursing report sessions and ensure that all other nursing staff on the shift attend.

Works with the Associate Director of Nursing in developing systems to organize the unit on a 24-hour basis.

Direct staff in following up on pending physician orders including laboratory test, rehabilitation, or medical appointments, etc.

Notify staff of assignments and make daily rounds to ensure that nursing service personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.
- Provide staff with feedback on care delivery.

Interpret the department's policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies as required.

Keep Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Manager updated on current resident status.

Communicate medical concerns with Associate Director of Nursing, other nursing administrative staff, or physicians as required.

Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-department personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to ensure that nursing services and activities can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of the residents.

Review nurses' notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care being provided, that they reflect the resident's response to the care, and that such care is provided in accordance with the resident's wishes.

Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules to ensure that medications are being administered as ordered and that treatments are provided as scheduled.

Monitor nursing care to ensure that all residents are treated fairly, and with kindness, dignity, and respect.

Contact physicians to notify them of due or overdue orders.

Supervise Bladder Assessment and Training Program.

Coordinate MDS schedule.

Update nurse assistant flow sheet and care kardex.
-
Attend care planning meetings and work closely with other clinical staff in developing and overseeing the care plan.

Participate in quality assurance studies and quality assessment groups.
-
Participate in weekly physicians’ rounds.
-
Complete Infection Control Board monthly.
-
Ensure timely completion, editing and transcription of Doctor's orders.

Attend the interdisciplinary meeting and contribute pertinent information.
-
Monitor Restorative Program documentation and supervise the RCNAS.
-
Oversee wound treatment program.
-
Assign staff to complete assessments and ensure that they are completed in a timely manner in accordance with Sherrill House policy.

Oversee ordering of supplies and monitor the prudent use of them.
- Check emergency equipment on each shift.

Manage related care issues on the unit including management of orders, medications, and treatments.

Notify families of change in resident status.

Be part of the resident dining experience in the dining room and on the units.

Complete pain assessments and report results to appropriate physician or nurse practitioner.

Participates in interviewing and selection of new staff.
-
Participate in evaluation of staff performance and complete required performance reviews and competency evaluations.

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Nursing, counsels staff concerning their performance and adherence to Personnel Policies and Procedures.

Collaborates with Staff Development in coordinating orientation and continuing education.

Convenes staff meetings for the assigned shift on a regular basis.

Collaborates with nursing administration to promote cooperation among shifts.

Promotes cooperation among all disciplines and supports the multidisciplinary team approach to resident care.

Participates in continuing educational programs that contribute to professional development.

Develops, implements, and supports Quality Improvement programs on the unit.

Responds to changing needs of Nursing Services and assumes other responsibilities as required.

Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as requested by the Administrator or Director of Nursing Services.

Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
-
Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.

Review complaints and grievances made or filed by department personnel. Make appropriate reports as may be necessary.

Review complaints and grievances made by residents and make a written/oral report to the Director indicating what action(s) were taken to resolve the complaint or grievance. Follow facility's established procedures.

Maintain a written record of resident's complaints and/or grievances that indicate the action taken to resolve the complaint and the status of the complaint.

Report and investigate all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property.

Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit.

Greet newly admitted residents upon admission. Escort them to their rooms as necessary.
Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
License Requirement: Must have active Massachusetts RN or LPN license in good standing.
Experience: Three years of clinical experience in gerontological nursing.
Computer Skills: Ability to utilize a management information system for the purposes of collecting and analyzing data, maintaining files, providing summary reports, and communicating relevant information to department managers, administrative staff and the governing board.
