Description of Duties:
This is the position of Fish & Wildlife Biological Scientist II in the Public Access Services Office of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The position is responsible for working with FWC management area staff and stakeholders to plan and develop nature-based recreation opportunities on FWC managed areas.
The Public Access Biologist assists the Planning Team in developing plans that facilitate wildlife viewing and nature-based recreation on areas managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Duties include but are not limited to: 1) conducting inventories and assessments of natural and cultural resources and recreational facilities, 2) planning sustainable recreational trails such as hiking, paddling, off-road cycling and equestrian trails. 3) Drafts reports and summaries of assessments and inventories in support of plan development, and 4) acting as a resource for FWC and others on subjects related to wildlife and outdoor recreation.
Works with the PASO and FWC management area staff, technicians, volunteers, and contractors to implement Public Access and Recreation components of Management Plans. Duties include, but are not limited to 1) planning, designing, clearing and marking recreational trails, 2) monitoring recreational use and its impacts on and relationships to wildlife, and 3) constructing amenities such as kiosks and camping platforms.
Conducts monitoring of trails and facilities on FWC’s managed areas to ensure they meet agency and state requirements. Conducts surveys of wildlife distribution, diversity, and abundance in relation to outdoor recreation opportunities and infrastructure. Prepares required reports, initiates other feedback opportunities such as trail critiques, and provides needed training to ensure public access is successfully managed.
Participates in outreach programs. These may include activities such as presentations at stakeholder meetings, attendance at recreational user group conferences and supervising volunteer work crews.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to accurately read and interpret maps and charts; accurately use a compass and GPS; ability to collect scientific data; ability to perform common wildlife surveys; ability to create maps using GIS technology; ability to perform a variety of skilled trade functions and perform physical labor using assorted hand, power and gasoline tools and scientific equipment; maintain all equipment in safe, useable condition; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; accurately prepare reports; work independently with minimal supervision; establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals of varying backgrounds; able to lift up to 50 pounds; work in remote areas under inclement weather conditions. Ability to operate ATV’s, 4x4 vehicles, paddlecraft, and small powerboats.
