CERTIFICATION/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduated of an accredited nursing program with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing
- WV Licensure as a Registered Nurse
- Successful completion of an accredited School Nursing Program
- Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate.

Job Summary:
The School Nurse provides nursing/health related services to the students and school community at assigned school(s).
The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated.
Staff members serve as role models for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.
Staff members are expected to refrain from bullying, harassment, intimidation, and discrimination
Responsibilities:
- Respond to student health issues at assigned school(s)
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the health service program for the assigned school(s)
- Serve as a resource and consultant to the school staff, students, and families on health-related issues.
- Develop, write, and implement health care plans for specific individual students, including Health Electronic Care Plans (HECP)
- Maintain and update knowledge and understanding of WVBE Policy 2422.7 Standards of Basic and Specialized Health Care Procedures and the Health Care Procedures Manual
- Participate in establishing procedures for emergency care of student injuries/illnesses.
- Develop and implement procedures and programs for the prevention and control of communicable diseases.
- Assist in the investigation of communicable diseases.
- Promote the collaboration and transfer of information among the community health professionals, the schools, and the Braxton County Health Department
- Review and update student health records
- Attend and participate in faculty, staff, and community meetings as a representative of the school health program.
- Participate in the school’s multi-disciplinary team evaluation process.
- Participate as the health professional in IEP and 504 meetings.
- Serve as the liaison between the school, student, parents, and health care providers.
- Collaborate with principals and staff to assess, plan, and maintain a healthy school environment.
- Coordinate and implement the school’s health screening program and follow-up activities.
- Coordinate and monitor compliance with state immunization laws.
- Assist in the development of health care plans for special needs students.
- Assist and provide health care class instruction.
- Maintain ongoing contact with school principal(s), teachers, aides, secretaries, cooks, and custodians regarding health-related issues.
- Identify and prioritize students who need individual health care plans.
- Administer first aid and emergency care by responding immediately.
- Monitor medication administration at the schools.
- Perform medication audits of schools’ medication logs.
- Ensure the delivery of school health services at assigned schools.
- Maintain confidential information in compliance with state nursing procedures, Braxton County Schools’ procedures and the WVDE’s procedures for the Collection, Maintenance, and Disclosure of School Records, and the federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
- Maintain expertise by participating in relevant professional development.
- Coordinate referrals for various health problems to appropriate community resources and keep appropriate school staff apprised of the referral status.
- Assist with health-related attendance problems.
- Complete an annual report and submit to the Special Education Director
- Participate on Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) School Team
- Other duties as assigned.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or printed material, and the ability to adjust focus.
The duties of this job require the employee to drive to and from various schools throughout Braxton County. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are the representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and filed trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
