SUMMARY
Surya Powered is seeking a Development Associate to lead the land acquisition efforts for the development of community solar projects in Illinois. You will play a crucial role in supporting site origination and development of distributed solar and solar + storage projects in Illinois. In this role, you will engage in various tasks related to land acquisition, permitting, environmental review, and other key aspects of project development, aligning with Surya’s renewable energy goals and growth strategy. As a Development Associate, you will be responsible for building landowner relationships in the interest of leasing/purchasing their land to host a Solar farm. You will demonstrate strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining a positive and professional demeanor. This position is based in Chicago, IL and reports to the directly to Senior Project Development Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for all phases of solar project acquisition process, from greenfield to contract signing. Key responsibilities include:
- Identify and evaluate potential land parcels suitable for renewable energy projects in the Midwest
- Conduct thorough research and analysis to assess land ownership, zoning regulations, environmental considerations, and other factors impacting land acquisition.
- Develop and maintain relationships with landowners, stakeholders, and local communities to facilitate land acquisition efforts.
- Negotiate land purchase agreements, easements, leases, and other contractual arrangements with landowners, ensuring favorable terms and conditions.
- Coordinate with internal teams, legal advisors, and external consultants to complete due diligence assessments, including title searches, environmental assessments, and permitting requirements.
- Manage the land acquisition process from initial site identification to final project approval, ensuring compliance with project timelines and budgetary constraints.
- Stay informed about industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices in land acquisition and renewable energy development.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including project development, engineering, and regulatory affairs, to support overall project objectives and milestones.
QUALIFICATIONS
We're looking for a candidate who is energetic, self-driven, practical, outcome-focused, and collaborative. Key qualifications include:
- Bachelor's degree in Real Estate, Business Administration, Environmental Science, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in land acquisition, real estate development, or related field, with a focus on renewable energy projects.
- Strong negotiation skills with the ability to communicate effectively and build rapport with landowners and stakeholders.
- Familiarity with legal and regulatory requirements related to land use, permitting, and environmental compliance.
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to conduct thorough due diligence assessments.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently, as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
- Willingness to travel frequently within the assigned regions and adapt to changing project priorities.
