JOB OVERVIEW:
A full-time Post-Doctoral Research Fellow position is open in the Neurodisparities and Health Justice Research Group under the direction of Dr. Altaf Saadi at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The vision of the lab is to advance health equity and justice both within neurology and health care more broadly by targeting evolving social and structural determinants of health, with a focus on immigrants, forcibly displaced persons, incarcerated persons, and other persons from marginalized backgrounds. The postdoc will work with qualitative and quantitative data types, primarily about health-related needs and outcomes among immigrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers, with a focus on those with cognitive impairment, traumatic brain injury, and comorbid psychiatric issues, including individuals in the community and justice-involved individuals in and outside of carceral settings. Collaborators are multidisciplinary and passionate about improving care for marginalized populations through policy-oriented and community-engaged research. The successful candidate will be closely supervised by Dr. Saadi and will lead and contribute to several peer-reviewed publications.
Fellows must have an MD, PhD or other terminal/equivalent degree is required in a relevant discipline. Fellows can be (1) physicians who would participate during research years within their residency or fellowship training; (2) physicians or other clinicians who have completed their clinical training and wish to do a research fellowship; and (3) non-clinicians who have completed a doctoral degree but have not yet been appointed to a full-time faculty position.
Candidates must submit 1) a cover letter that describes how their professional experiences and interests, as well as future career goals, align with the mission of the lab, 2) a 5–10-page writing sample (published or unpublished), 3) CV, and 4) names of three references who can speak to professional and/or scholarly accomplishments. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The primary responsibilities of the postdoc will include conducting projects using community participatory research and mixed methods methodologies, including conducting and analyzing interview and survey data. Postdoc candidates are expected to analyze and present data regularly, write manuscripts and grant/fellowships, and actively coordinate and communicate with collaborators.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
This position requires independence, effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, critical thinking, multi-tasking, organization, ability to work and adapt to a high-demand research environment, and ability to work with marginalized patient groups.
Candidates should describe familiarity with software packages such as qualitative coding software (e.g., DeDoose), statistical software packages (e.g., R, SAS, or Stata), and data management and survey tools (e.g., Redcap or Qualtrics) in their cover letter. Strong skills in statistical analyses are preferred.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience with immigrant or forcibly displaced populations, familiarity with neuropsychiatric outcomes, and one or more peer-reviewed scientific publications. Spanish fluency is a plus.
QUALIFICATIONS:
MD, PhD or other terminal/equivalent degree is required in a relevant discipline. This may include public health, and psychology, among others. Candidates should describe in their cover letter how their specific academic background is relevant to the research goals of the lab.
The applicant will be expected to play an informal role in mentoring trainees in research.
