Job Purpose:
The Head Cross-country Coach is responsible for initiating various aspects of the Cross-country Program, such as recruiting within the school, scheduling opponents, training, and coaching team members. The Head Cross-country Coach is required to abide by the IHSA rules and regulations as well as the rules and regulations set by the Josephinum Academy of the Sacred Heart employee handbook.

The Cross-country Coach will work with and take direction from the Athletic Director. This is a stipend position during the fall sports season. The time commitment is 3+ hours per day 4-5 days per week during the season.
Job Responsibilities:
- Apply ethical and professional standards and conduct oneself in a respectful manner with athletes, officials, coaches, parents, faulty, and other applicable parties to promote sportsmanship and fair play.
- Recruit within the school, train, and coach the members of the Cross-country Program.
- Coordinate the development and promotion of the Cross-country Program.
- Establish, maintain, and enforce academic, behavioral, and training standards for participation/eligibility rules.
- Maintain constant check student eligibility through grade checks and other applicable means.
- Organize, schedule, and direct practice sessions, clinics, and/or individual or small group training sessions between the hours of 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.
- Assess, openly and honestly, players’ skills, assign team positions, provide motivation, and engage team members during practices and games to improve their physical, social, and emotional growth as individuals and a team.
- Attend and coach all home and away games and tournaments including accompanying the team members or ensuring appropriate arrangements are made for safe pick up and/or drop off with their respective families.
- Ensure student safety and health through continual supervision during practices, clinics, games, conditioning, and other related events whether it be on the court, in the facilities (e.g., locker rooms, cafeterias), or in transit and, when applicable, immediately notify the Athletic Director of injuries, accidents, etc. including the completion of incident reports.
- Assist the Athletic Director with the scheduling and/or rescheduling of games.
- Determine game strategy based on the team’s capabilities.
- Maintain, secure, and transport all applicable equipment and uniforms.
- Complete administrative tasks as assigned by the Athletic Director such as collection of evaluation and permission forms and ordering/distribution of uniforms.
- Hold a preseason meeting with all student-athletes and parents before the first official game.
- Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
- Represent Josephinum Academy and the Cross-country program in a professional manner.
- Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or other appropriate administrator.
Education/Skills/Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- 1-3 years of experience as an assistant or head coach at the high school level.
- Illinois Professional Educators License or ASEP Coaching Certification required.
- Knowledge of the sport.
- Ability to work 3 hours per day, 4-5 days per week throughout the winter sport season.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to apply principles and practices of sound management and supervisory methods.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Pass a background check.
- Have a valid driver's license and be able to drive.
- Completion of Protecting God’s Children Seminar and monthly on-line bulletins.
- Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills.
- Must possess knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in either a school, non-profit, or for-profit organization.
