We are looking for paid farm help for the 2024 season with the ability to transition to permanent employees.
At Big Jim Farms, we are a U-Pick farm and open our farm to the general public. This is a unique farm experience as you will have the opportunity to support the educational goals of Big Jim Farms in addition to learning the agriculture components of a farm. We offer a variety of classes, field trips, workshops, and volunteer days that interns can assist in and/or lead.
Job duties throughout the season include crop & animal management and beekeeping. Early summer job duties are land prep, planting, and maintenance and water management including installation of drip irrigation systems. Design and implementation of hoop houses & green houses. Design & build educational stations while working with local educational partners for various projects. During summer we need help managing our farmers' market booths at various locations in Albuquerque and Los Ranchos. During harvest, we will need help with the U-Pick operations, including working with the general public, farm stand assistance, farm tours, & educational program support. In addition to the agriculture and educational components, employees will gain knowledge of the entrepreneur & agritourism aspects of the industry.
Full Job Description:
Intern will work in all weather conditions and must also be able to lift 50 lbs., have a valid driver's license, and be able to work independently. This position is available now through December with the ability to transition to permanent employee 2025 forward. Generally working Monday through Friday, 20-40 hours a week and, during harvest season, available to work weekends. Part-Time or Full-Time positions available. We can accommodate a flexible schedule.
Requirements:
1. Agriculture experience is preferred due to the nature of the position. Experience should include livestock management, crop management or Ag equipment experience. 2. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; conveys information clearly, concisely, effectively at all levels; builds/maintain strong relationships within and across the company; good public speaking skills a plus. 3. Strong project/time management, organizational, and planning skills; attention to details with focus on quality, service, and safety; prioritizes work under deadlines, multi-tasks and adapts as needed. 4. Proactive, exercises good judgment; anticipates, addresses, and troubleshoots issues. 5. Works effectively both with a team and independently. 6. Professionally always represents department and company values.
Physical Requirements:
1. Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather with exposure to excessive heat, cold, wind, vibration, moving mechanical parts, and other adverse environmental conditions. 2. Ability to perform the following: heavy lifting (50 lbs. frequently), carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, shoveling, and raking. 3. Must be 18 years old and have a valid driver's license. Essential Job Duties: 1. Work alongside experienced agriculture staff members to help facilitate operational needs, daily tasks and other responsibilities, and special projects as needed. 2. Animal management including but not limited to daily care of nutrition, watering, and record keeping. 3. Assist with crop program needs that may include but not limited to crop planting, record keeping and crop input requirements. 4. Participate in livestock facility and equipment maintenance: maintenance; cleaning and sanitizing of livestock barns and buildings; cleanup and spreading of livestock manure and bedding; and other livestock operation associated tasks. 5.
