Jul 13, 2024 - Aug 25, 2024, 6 worked hours per day. Hours are Sa & Su 12:30p-7p minus half hour break somewhere in between! Also Jul 25, 26, 30 & Aug 1, 7, 13 (12:30p-7p). Stipend is $120 per day toward commute/off-street parking, room & board for even int'l/visiting students/grads (closest inn is Vagabond).
On world-famous waterfront tourist venue mere steps from Beach & Marina/Harbor, manage your kiosk daily gaining hands-on educational and cultural visitor exchange experience promoting shells, succulents, nature & STEM craft. Aid in species identification and adoption/sales at the BEACH HOUSE, our lil flagship souvenir shop at SHORELINE VILLAGE which hosts year-round cultural entertainment, events, activities and has even been featured in several Hollywood 'DEXTER' and 'THE OC' series' episodes!
Be immersed in affluent SoCal beach life, gaining entry-level experience in sales, public speaking, customer service, merchandising, staging, natural history, taxonomy, conservation, maritime law/navigation, community relations & event coordination while building your resume, references and networking including with the nations' wealthiest visitors on their way to/from cruises/clubs/conventions or next tourist attraction! Dynamic opportunity to work directly on the water and perhaps on boats between Long Beach & Sunset/Huntington Beach.
MUST have availability to be on-site 12:30p-7p minus 1/2hr break daily all summer starting July 13, 2024 thru Aug 25, 2024 thus applicant should demonstrate free from classes, other internships or other work during those times; please submit 2024 class schedule with application/resume. At least 120hrs for internship credits seems the norm but credit hours not implied nor guaranteed; consult with your particular school for written confirmation if edu credits/hours worked off-campus here are expected.
Candidates must be matriculated or recently degreed in Marine bio/eng, Earth/env sci/policy, Geography, Geology, Ecology, Gemology, Aqua/horticulture, Hydrology, Malacology, Naval Arch, Zoology, Sustainability Mgmt, Adv/Mkt, Design, Travel/Tourism, Int'l Affairs, Climate Policy, or Business! Some prior sales experience helpful as our educational organization relies on sales & donations for continued operation incl inventory, cleanups, plantings, stipend, and eventual upgrade from current compact rented space.
Main duty is bridging the gap between marine biology and terrestrial ecology as an international ambassador promoting global culturing of succulent & shell (mussel, snail, conch, scallop, clam, etc) species mostly North American and Eastern Pacific, with emphasis on utilizing NASA-recommended plants for clean air and shell/pearl craft for carbon capture & climate conservation, inspiring visitors - and persons visited - to be stewards for mother Earth's most abundant yet precious resource, water. Some prior education in science, plants, shells, boating, crystals and/or gemstones required. NASBLA California Boater Safety certification highly desired, for occasional boat maintenance & waterway cleanups.
Greet and engage visitors in the benefits of our products & cause. Help select suitable cultured/handcrafted items to purchase/adopt, providing species ID & care. Log payments via cash or card into, and print receipt from, portable terminal, whenever requested. Ensure items priced correctly, signs presented professionally. Sweep, dust, water, refresh as needed. Develop strategy, additional signage to expand this grassroots organization's donor base. Off-street parking is avail but comes out of stipend so non-motor transport to/from site is encouraged, as well as is unique ability to be dropped off and/or picked up by acquaintances' boat or yacht directly in front!
Ability to communicate in spoken Spanish or another non-English spoken language is essential due to local and overseas tourist base. Some prior education or experience with shell/succulent ID, conservation, merchandising, sales, customer service, cash management, development, social media, outreach and community service is a plus. Beach community's hours and income are primarily weekends & holidays, making it perfect as a student or post-grad gig. - Basic familiarity with mobile cash & card processing using portable terminal
- Knowledge of basic math & a calculator app for adding purchases up
- Boating knowledge and/or NASBLA certification for boat maintenance & waterway cleanups.
- Ability to speak some English (passed TOEFL or IELTS if not fluent), and a 2nd language fluently
- Verifiable study/research in biz, travel/tourism, ecology, conservation, marine bio/eng, horticulture, malacology, gemology, or earth sciences.
