Job Summary:

The Workplace Safety Officer role is part of the Administrative and Human Resources team that supports ETS’ mission through establishing and administering sound policies and best practices to ensure a safe and healthful work environment.

The Workplace Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines. This position advises on safety measures, conduct risk assessments, and enforce preventative measures. This role makes a critical difference at ETS by promoting a safe workplace, providing training, and investigating incidents to improve overall safety within the organization.

The position is primarily onsite but flexible to a hybrid schedule, and the location is at ETS’ Georgetown Yards facility. The days and hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM.

The annual salary range for this position is $65,000 to $70,000. ETS strives to achieve pay equity and transparency as part of our goal to create an equitable workplace.
What you contribute to this role – Responsibilities:

Help ETS succeed in carrying out our mission through working together with other staff to transform systems of harm and inequity to create different approaches to improving community health and safety through addressing substance use and homelessness.

Assist with the organization-wide initiative to reimagine our interconnectedness within our community to overcome the aspects of our society and organizational culture shaped by white supremacy and settler colonialism
-
Plan and coordinate a vision for safety in the organization
-
Lead, model, and enforce safety excellence standards and processes
-
Identify and monitor hazardous situations, often including risk categorization
-
Communicate and collaborate with Quality & Risk Management Team about safety and health throughout the organization, including completing risk assessments
-
Create and track safety-related objectives, metrics, and goals for the organization
-
Minimize hazards and proactively reduce risk in the workplace
-
Investigate incident or near-misses and lead root cause analysis
-
Create and share a formal Occupational Safety and Health Policy
-
Drive employee safety engagement and meaningful involvement
-
Act as the primary representative who can speak to safety and health as needed for the organization
-
Create, maintain, and improve policies and systems related to safety-all designed to create a culture of continuous improvement
-
Perform regular patrols, inspections, evaluations, and/or walk-throughs of facilities and employee working conditions
-
Conduct toolbox meeting and other ongoing learning opportunities for staff
-
Ensure all staff-from temp, contract workers to regular employees-have completed necessary training and are equipped to perform roles safely
-
Promote and reinforce safe behaviors across projects and job sites
-
Take measures to drive accountability for safety
-
Organize and maintain all safety and compliance-related forms
-
Drive the development of a data-driven culture that can coach around safety
-
Use emergency authority when needed to stop unsafe behaviors
-
Contribute to and help lead the organizations safety council and/or safety committees
-
Verify, approve, and submit injury logs and reports to the government to ensure compliance
-
Conduct job hazard analysis
-
This position works to understand and address patient safety and community violence concerns
-
Interact and respond/communicate with Department of Labor and other governing bodies as it relates to safety and health
-
Record, investigate, and follow-up/track incidents to determine cause and to handle workers’ compensation claims
-
Compile and leverage ongoing data to show “state of safety” and return on safety investments
-
Manage safety complaints or safety concerns
-
Identify leading indicators and other metrics to the Risk and Compliance Committee to be used to support safety, safe practices, and employee engagement in general
-
Develop and train around the organizations emergency response plan and emergency alert notification system

Requirements:
What you bring to this role – Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or related field required

Health and Safety certification preferred
-
Two or more years of related experience preferred
Required Sills/Knowledge/Abilities:

Attention to detail-The Safety Officer’s primary duty is to help establish a safe environment for those working for the organization. Paying meticulous attention to detail and having the ability to spot potential hazards is a core part of the role of a workforce safety officer.

Communication- Effective communication is paramount for the position: must convey safety protocols, procedures, and emergency plans etc.
-
Problem Solving- Creating a process of achieving a goal by overcoming obstacles. The problems in need of solutions range from simple personal tasks to complex issues and even technical aspects. Unexpected situations for a safety officer are daily. Safety Officers analyze problems, identify solutions, and implement changes to reach ultimate goals.

Emergency Management/Emergency Response Planning- Preparing for emergencies is important for the success of the safety officer. Emergency response is a set of actions taken during unexpected events, such as natural disasters or accidents. The goal of the Safety Officer is to develop clear and effective emergency response plans.

Knowledge of safety regulations- The Safety Officer needs to know all the safety regulations specific to industry standards so that plans are in place to ensure safety compliance measures are solidified and followed. This role has a lens of restorative justice rather than that of enforcement.

Leadership - The Safety Officer is instrumental in helping managers and supervisors learn and execute basic concepts to improve overall safety performance.

Risk Management-The Safety Officer excels at assessing risk. They identify potential dangers in the workplace and develop strategies in collaboration with Quality and Risk Management Team to reduce and/or mitigate hazards.

Occupational Health- The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety measures and conducts risk analysis. Safety officer implements a quality training program, and the main duty is to ensure that the organization is complying and adheres to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines.

Physical Conditions and Requirements:

The employee may be exposed to illicit drug residues and fumes or other bio-hazardous materials when carrying out job functions. There is also potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens. ETS will provide employees with appropriate training to limit the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Policies and procedures are in place addressing each item specifically.

The employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear; frequently required to stand, walk, and kneel; occasionally to climb balance, or stoop; rarely to crouch or crawl.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, and peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is moderate.

Ability to travel throughout facilities to conduct safety inspections and meet with staff, leaders, and vendors.

Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time and be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
