Role Description
This is a full-time on-site role as an Optometric Assistant with Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Palo Alto, CA. The Optometric Assistant/Optician will be responsible for various day-to-day tasks, including supporting optometrists in patient care, assisting with appointment scheduling, providing exceptional customer service, and participating in training programs. The role requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
Qualifications
- Experience in Optometry or Ophthalmology
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to schedule appointments efficiently
- Exceptional customer service skills
- Knowledge of assistive technology is a plus
- Fluency in a second language is a plus
- Previous experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired is a plus
- Demonstrated flexibility in addressing a broad spectrum of patient requirements and preferences.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate positive patient rapport and build relationships while increasing patient-retention.
- Strong communication skills (oral and written) with the proven ability to manage priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to multi-task, set priorities and ensure that patient commitments/deadlines are met.
- Proficiency in utilization of automated equipment and systems standard to the optometry industry.
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Must be physically able to stand for long periods of time, read a computer screen for long periods of time, reach, and lift up to 20 lbs.
- Previous experience in a medical office setting is preferred.
- Knowledge of medical administrative support functions.
- Familiarity with office procedures in a healthcare environment.
Responsibilities:
- Greet patients and assist with check-in and check-out procedures.
- Perform preliminary tests such as visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, and eye muscle movements.
- Prepare examination rooms for patient visits.
- Assist the optometrist with diagnostic testing and procedures.
- Maintain accurate patient records using medical terminology.
- Handle administrative tasks including scheduling appointments and processing insurance claims.
- Collect and relay pertinent health and ocular history to the doctor.
- Educate patients on contact lens insertion, removal, and care.
- Educate patients on optical frames, lenses, vision correction devices, and Low Vision devices.
- Travel, as needed between practices.
