Component Lab Technician I
Saving lives for more then 75 years Blood Bank of Hawaii opened its doors in February 1941 on the grounds of what is now The Queen’s Medical Center. Known then as Honolulu Blood-Plasma Bank, the blood bank served as a wartime agency under the Office of Civilian Defense, returning to its non-profit civilian status in 1943. Honolulu Blood-Plasma Bank officially changed its name to Blood Bank of Hawaii in 1946. Today Blood Bank of Hawaii is a non-profit organization that provides lifesaving blood products to 18 civilian hospitals statewide. Typical uses for the blood include surgical procedures, treatment of accident victims, ulcers, anemia, delivery for mother and baby, and cancer.

Primary Purpose:
Under the supervision of the Component Laboratory Supervisor, the Component Laboratory Technician I is responsible for assisting in the manufacturing of blood products.
We’re looking for an individual who has excellent interpersonal skills, a team player and is a self-starter who is able to follow written and verbal instructions and guidelines, due to the fact the Blood Bank of Hawaii is regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). This position works varied shifts and must be available to work during our operating hours, and on occasion overnight shifts.
**No-experience necessary – we do on the job training (paid).** We are a 24/7 operation, so you will need to be available to work any shift, as well as any day during the week, including weekends and holidays.
$16.00 paid training period
$17.56 upon successful completion of training period/after 90 days
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follows organizational policies and procedures and performs duties in compliance with BBH SOPs, cGMPs and external regulations.
- Assures quality customer service to all customers.
- Receives and prepares whole blood and apheresis blood components.
- Performs daily production maintenance and QC.
- Produces cryoprecipitate and plasma cryoprecipitate reduced.
- Inspects, labels, quarantines and destroys (discards) blood components.
- Packs blood samples and submits test orders for required donor testing.
- Packs recovered plasma for further manufacturing.
- Recognizes common equipment and procedural problems and takes appropriate initial response, communicates and performs follow-up.
- Follows organizational policies and procedures and performs duties in compliance with cGMP regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge/Education:
- Previous medical/clinical laboratory experience desirable.
- High School graduate or equivalent required.
