The Gateway School seeks an Associate Director of Placement and Admissions starting no later than July 1, 2024. Reporting to the Director of Admissions, the Associate Director will participate in the entire admissions process and be responsible for the placement of students graduating from the school or otherwise leaving.

Placement
- School Placement: Building and maintaining strong relationships with the Admissions Team at a broad range of independent and public schools to ensure appropriate placement of graduates and undergraduates. This involves, on a regular basis, researching and visiting schools, both in and outside of NYC, and inviting external admissions teams to tour the school.
- Placement Process : Advising and guiding parents through the process of identifying and securing placement in another school either because the student is graduating, is ready to transition to a mainstream setting, or is no longer benefitting from the school’s program. This includes:
- Observing students in and out of classes, well before they engage in the placement process and consulting with administrators to develop a list of appropriate schools
- Preparing reference materials to guide parents through the process
- Hosting group and individual meetings with parents to introduce them to the placement process and consult with them on the specific placement of their student
- Recommending evaluators
- Managing all the administrative tasks and duties involved with completing applications, preparing students for interviews, registering and sitting for standardized tests, and presenting and discussing students with admissions teams in order to properly inform their decisions
- Recording the application activity and results in the proper file for use in strategic planning and marketing
- Gathering feedback on the placement process from parents
- Reporting: Providing the Head of School and Director of Admissions with ongoing reports on the status of applications, acceptances, and final decisions, and sharing this information with Institutional Advancement
- Educational Leadership: Staying abreast of and reiterating throughout the admissions and placement processes the school’s programmatic goals, curriculum, and instructional practice
Admissions
- Admissions Process : Assisting with all aspects of the admissions process as requested with primary emphasis on:
- Greeting prospective students and families upon arrival for screenings and Open Houses, and managing student ambassadors
- Touring visitors, as requested
- Guiding parents and guardians of prospective students through the Admissions process
- Student Profile: This includes annually updating a summary file of the overall student profile for the Head of School
- A leader with strong relational and emotional intelligence, and cultural competency
- A strategic thinker who embraces Gateway’s mission and pedagogy and continually works to deepen their own expertise to enhance the effectiveness of the program
- A proactive and effective communicator
- A collaborator able to work as part of a team dedicated to transforming the lives of students with language-based learning differences
The ideal candidate will have:
- Master’s degree and experience/background in placement work
- Strong background in Special Education, specifically language-based learning differences
- Expansive professional network, preferably focused in the New York City educational community
- Administrative and/or leadership experience
- Demonstrated commitment to, leadership experience with, and a record of active engagement with diversity, equity, and/or inclusion work
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and adept at prioritizing, managing, and shifting between multiple projects

For almost 60 years, The Gateway School has transformed the lives of bright children who experience academic difficulty as a result of language-based learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, reading and writing disorders), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), executive function disorder, or auditory processing difficulties. Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Gateway enrolls approximately 160 students between the ages of 5-14. In small classes with a low student-to-teacher ratio, faculty and therapists meet students where they are, individualize instruction accordingly, and develop them into skilled, strategic, independent learners who are capable of advocating for themselves and who are prepared to transition into mainstream school and life.
