The Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Providence Healthcare System, provides primary care and specialty health services, including mental health care, oncology, prescriptions, treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dermatology, treatment for alcohol and drug abuse, and more.
This Certified Nurse Anesthetist (APN) is in the Surgical service line within in the Providence VA Medical Center in Rhode Island. This is a full-time position; 40 hours a week.
Certified Nurse Anesthetist (APN) provides perioperative anesthetic care to patients presenting for Surgery. The CRNA works in collaboration with other members of the health care team to improve the quality of care delivered to the Veteran and provides appropriate care for veterans ranging in age from 18 through geriatric years, taking into consideration diagnosis and physical, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs. Duties include but not limited to:
· Responsible for perioperative assessment, evaluation, planning and conduct f an appropriate anesthetic tailored to meet the needs of the surgical patient.
· Responsible for assuring safe recovery from anesthesia and provide pain treatment in the immediate postoperative period.
· Accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice while providing care to surgical patients.
· Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of information obtained to carry out required duties.
· Routinely communicates with Physicians, Managers and other Allied Health Professional staff using sound interpersonal skills.
Advanced Practice Nurse (Certified Nurse Anesthetist) Basic Requirements
- English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
- Education. A master’s or doctoral degree in nurse anesthesia. (Applicants pending the completion of educational requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until the education requirements are met.) Nursing education must be from a school of professional nursing anesthesia accredited by Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs (COA) at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
- Licensure and Certification. The following licensure and certification requirements are considered conditions of employment.
- License. All APN (CNAs) must maintain an active, current, full and unrestricted license to practice as a CNA or equivalent, in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
- Basic Certification. All APN (CNAs) must maintain full and current certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) or an equivalent Nurse Anesthetist certification recognized by the COA.
Pay: Competitive salary, regular salary increases, potential for performance awards. $178,162 - $258,269 per year
Paid Time Off: 50 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
