Job Summary:
As a compassionate and skilled Registered Nurse in the Mother/Baby Unit, you will play a vital role in providing comprehensive care to mothers and their newborn infants during the postpartum period. This position requires expertise in maternal and newborn care, effective communication skills, and a commitment to promoting the health and well-being of both mother and baby.
Responsibilities:
- Postpartum Care:
- Provide holistic care to postpartum mothers, including assessment of physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs.
- Monitor maternal vital signs, uterine involution, and vaginal bleeding following childbirth.
- Assist with pain management, breastfeeding initiation, and maternal-infant bonding.
- Newborn Care:
- Perform assessments of newborn infants, including Apgar scoring, vital signs, and physical examination.
- Monitor newborn feeding, elimination patterns, and signs of jaundice or other health concerns.
- Educate parents on newborn care, including feeding techniques, safe sleep practices, and infant hygiene.
- Breastfeeding Support:
- Provide education and assistance to mothers with breastfeeding initiation and lactation support.
- Assess breastfeeding latch, milk supply, and infant feeding cues.
- Offer guidance on positioning and techniques to optimize breastfeeding success.
- Parent Education and Support:
- Educate parents on postpartum recovery, newborn care, and infant safety.
- Provide guidance on postpartum exercises, contraception options, and family planning.
- Offer emotional support and resources for adjustment to parenthood and the transition to home.
- Complication Management:
- Recognize and respond to complications in mothers or newborns, such as postpartum hemorrhage, infant respiratory distress, or maternal infection.
- Initiate appropriate interventions and collaborate with healthcare team members to ensure timely resolution.
- Communication and Collaboration:
- Collaborate with obstetricians, pediatricians, lactation consultants, and other members of the healthcare team to coordinate patient care.
- Communicate effectively with patients and families, providing clear explanations and answering questions about care plans and procedures.
- Documentation and Record-Keeping:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes in electronic medical records.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and hospital policies regarding documentation and charting.
