GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
Provides general labor support for the Gas Department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Read gas meters for accuracy.
- Works construction crew for laying and maintenance of gas pipelines.
- Operates various types of light equipment such as shovels, picks, etc.
- May operate heavy equipment such as back-hoe, pavement breaker and trencher if qualified.
- Trains in techniques of plastic pipe welding.
- Maintains equipment in good working condition.
- Helps load and unload trucks.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of materials and equipment used in gas services.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with public and other employees.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities in Gas Distribution; Skilled operation of tools and equipment; Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
EDUCATION
High School diploma or equivalent.
DRIVER LICENSE
Valid State Driver’s License, or ability to obtain one.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including utility truck, compressors, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile radio, phone.
