School Nurse
GENERAL INFORMATION:
This is a full- time position in a dual immersion (Spanish-English) elementary charter school. This is a unique opportunity to join the staff of a dual immersion, holistic charter school.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- State certification as a RN (Certified School nurse preferred)
- Registered nurse in good standing meeting all applicable federal and state licensure requirements
- Required security clearances
- English communication skills (reading, writing, speaking) – knowledge of Spanish preferred
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong interpersonal skills to include the ability to work effectively with teachers, parents and students from diverse backgrounds

- Interest in working as part of a team that focuses on student needs
- Interest in keeping up with best health care practices
- Working knowledge of public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies
- Working knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services
- Ability to identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease
- Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency and other community resources
- Ability to develop and maintain health records on students, as well as develop positive working relationships
- Positive attitude toward children
- Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining safety standards, programs for monitoring communicable and/or infectious diseases among students and personnel, procedure for reporting hazardous conditions; establish safety rules, and ensure cleanliness of nursing services work area, treatment area, and student care area
- Walking, ability to read and write and ability to distinguish smells
The school nurse specializes in advancing the well being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. To that end, the school nurse will facilitate positive student responses to normal development, promote health and safety, intervene with actual and potential health problems, provide case management services, and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.
The School Nurse will identify and treat health disorders among students and provide instruction in the maintenance of good health and disease prevention. This strong performer must evaluate the physical conditions of students and refer students to appropriate resources as needed. Decisions made by this employee require discretionary judgment and analysis.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist to develop policies, procedures and work standards for school health program
- Monitor compliance of school health program with federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies
- Prepare health reports for school director
- Collaborate with other child-support agencies in designing and providing a school health program
- Serve as a resource person on health issues
- Provide staff development on health-related topics for school staff and volunteers
- Screen and conduct health appraisals for students and staff
- Provide follow-up evaluations on students
- Recommend corrective action where problems are identified
- Correspond with parents on health needs of children
- Record immunizations, health findings and other relevant health data
- Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may come up from time to time or are assigned directly
EVALUATION
This position is evaluated annually by the Executive Director. Evaluation is to be based upon fulfillment of duties and responsibilities listed in this job description as determined by observation, review of records and reports, and administrative judgment of the effectiveness and quality of services.
