Job Description: Outpatient Medical Coder
Position Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Outpatient Medical Coder to join our healthcare team. The Outpatient Medical Coder will be responsible for accurately assigning appropriate ICD (International Classification of Diseases) and CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes to outpatient medical records, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will play a critical role in optimizing revenue cycle management and supporting the delivery of quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Review outpatient medical records to accurately assign ICD and CPT codes according to established coding guidelines and conventions.
2. Ensure that all diagnoses and procedures documented in medical records are coded appropriately and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
3. Utilize encoders and coding software to assist in assigning accurate codes and maintaining productivity standards.
4. Collaborate with healthcare providers and clinical staff to clarify documentation and resolve coding discrepancies.
5. Stay updated on changes in coding guidelines, regulations, and reimbursement policies to ensure coding accuracy and compliance.
6. Adhere to confidentiality and security standards in handling patient health information (PHI) and medical records.
7. Participate in coding audits and quality improvement initiatives to support continuous process improvement and compliance efforts.
8. Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, including coding team members, billing specialists, and clinical staff, to address coding-related issues and promote collaboration.
Qualifications:
- Certified Coding Credential (e.g., CPC, CCS, RHIA, or RHIT) required.
- Minimum of [X years] of outpatient coding experience in a healthcare setting.
- Proficiency in assigning ICD and CPT codes for outpatient services, including office visits, surgeries, diagnostic tests, and procedures.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes.
- Familiarity with coding software, encoders, and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex medical documentation.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with healthcare providers, coding team members, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize workload to meet productivity and accuracy targets.
