The Medical Lab Technician (MLT) reports to the Lab Manager and processes and tests all types of laboratory specimens; reviews and reports lab results; performs operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation and equipment; acts as resource as needed. Specific responsibilities include:
Responsibilities
· Responsible for performing moderate and high-complexity testing.
· Performs quality control procedures and instrument checks.
· Notifies nursing unit and/or physician of critical lab values.
· Maintains accurate laboratory records on procedures performed for statistics and billing.
· Meets current documentation standards and policies.
· Interacts professionally with the Laboratory Manager, President and medical staff.
· Consults with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
· Follows standard precautions at all times.
· Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly.
· Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products, instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies.
· Maintains current knowledge of hospital policy, CAP, JCAHO, state and other regulatory requirements.
· Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
Qualifications
· Associates degree or equivalent experience; graduate of accredited school of medical laboratory technician.
· Registered in accordance with an approved certifying agency (ASCP, NCA, AMT or CSMLS). Equivalency evaluation by NACES or AICE for non-US trained personnel must be completed within 30 days of hire. Licensure, as required by the state.
· 2+ years as a medical laboratory technician.
