Summary:
Leads the strategy development, design, implementation, and support of the organization's major enterprise databases. Leads and guides other database administrators in routine and project activities. Works with cross functional teams to plan for and implement applications and their associated databases. Establishes and implement standards for database monitoring and control. Ensures enterprise applications have appropriate data backup, recovery, and high-availability capabilities. Provides expert level support for other IT areas as needs arise.
Responsibilities:
(35%)* Works with the IT management team to develop short and long term strategic and operational plans for database platforms and development, application support, and supporting tools.
(35%)* Assists in building and supporting a collaborative and cross skilled database support team. Works closely with manager to assign tasks and responsibilities to others on team, to provide personnel coaching and feedback, and to guide activities of group.
(30%)* Establishes, communicates, and implements standards and procedures for designing, installing, securing, tuning, monitoring, and managing major databases and related applications. Champions new technologies and approaches to help meet organization's IT needs.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Monitors, analyzes, and reports database and related technology resource utilization and performance, and works with others as necessary to resolve issues. Projects future requirements, and plans and recommends approaches to meet those needs.
Ensures that high availability options are properly configured, well documented, tested and maintained. Ensure database backup, restoration, and disaster recovery processes are fully documented, communicated, and tested.
Works collaborative with system administrators, network administrators, other DBAs, vendors, and application support personnel to support business applications and strategic initiatives. As required, leads and actively participates on project teams to add and improve IT services.
Plays a lead role in development and support of other IT technologies, particularly those closely related to the implementation and delivery of database systems.
Participates in call / coverage rotation to provide 24 x 7 support.

Required Education:
Associate's degree is required for this role
**A Bachelors Degree in IT-related field or a minimum of an Associate's Degree in same area with five years related experience required. A strong background in Windows system administration, familiarity with SAN and backup technologies, and background in application development are all strongly preferred.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Three years experience managing MS SQL Server or Oracle database systems in an enterprise environment or five years enterprise experience managing other major systems and servers that include significant database systems.
Demonstrated leadership, project management, time management and organizational skills necessary to coordinate and direct the activities of others.
Demonstrated interpersonal and presentation skills needed to communicate effectively orally and in writing with individuals and groups at all levels.
Demonstrated strong analytic and problem solving skills, especially those required to resolve complex technical issues. Attention to detail and ability to work collaboratively with both technical and non-technical individuals.
Experience and demonstrated expertise in SQL query writing, in system management, in database maintenance activities, and in database design.

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
