Job Overview:
The Refrigeration Technician is responsible for inspecting freezer equipment and performing basic maintenance duties for freezers as necessary. The Refrigeration Technician is expexted to utilize specialized skill sets to support the refrigeration and optimal operating condition of a variety of equipment using company approved food safety practices and policies.
Responsibilities:
- Inspect, monitor, and maintain all ammonia refrigeration systems, and operate and maintain all facility heating and air conditioning systems.
- Able to perform all the duties of the Refrigeration Defroster

Routinely inspect freezers and freezer equipment

Inspect equipment daily

Evaluate integrity of freezer equipment and determine potential or actual equipment failure

Report any problem to the maintenance supervisor

Perform preventative maintenance repairs on the freezers as needed.

Perform basic maintenance duties for freezers as necessary

Understand plant refrigeration systems and boiler operations; be able to start/stop all systems according to proper procedure

Able to troubleshoot and repair refrigeration systems as neccessary

Perform emergency shut down and repair operations on freezers, boilers, and refrigeration systems

Perform welding repairs as necessary
-
Maintain and monitor all plant refrigeration systems for efficient operations

Understand ammonia characteristics, properties, dangers, and know proper handling procedures

Maintain all records and documents
-
Using specialized skill sets, performs corrective maintenance and emergency maintenance on food packaging/processing equipment and facility equipment to maximize equipment up-time.

Daily reports documenting the activities and work performed by the maintenance tech. Includes all equipment repairs from breakdowns, work orders or scheduled preventative maintenance. Assist in maintaining the maintenance departmental records.

Repair and/or rebuild pumps, gearboxes and other miscellaneous mechanical entities.

Assist other maintenance mechanics in troubleshooting advanced equipment problems using specialized skill sets. Train other maintenance mechanics with up to date information to increase skill level within department. Effectively document who, what, why and when the training takes place.

Promotes, adheres, and is responsible for Food Safety and Quality.

Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED or equivalent experience.

Technical or Refrigeration Engineers Technician Association (RETA) certification preferred

CARO or CIRO certification preferred
-
HAZMAT certification is preferred

Two years previous operating anhydrous ammonia systems or HVAC/R experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience required

Must have knowledge of state, federal and local regulations including OSHA and EPA-or with experience writing PSM

Extensive knowledge of refrigeration systems, hydraulics, boilers, and basic freezer equipment.

Experience in mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills and/or specialized training.

Read, write, and communicate as needed.

Experience in a food manufacturing environment preferred.
- Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks to accomplish objectives.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret a variety of technical information in mathematical and/or narrative form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
- Bi-Lingual a positive but not required.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; use hands, fingers, handle, or feel; and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee will be required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, and crouch on ladders or mechanical equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50-75 pounds. Pulmonary Exam will be required at hire and annual. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Work Enviornment
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet, hot and cold environment or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is exposed to sight & smell of food, dry & cold ingredients, and liquids. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and requires that hearing protection be worn in production areas always.
