Carmen builds on more than a decade of experience providing patient wellbeing from Médica Santa Carmen (MSC) in Mexico. From its founding in 2011, MSC is today the preeminent network of kidney centers providing over 1,300 dialysis therapies per day and locations inside the Mayo Clinic affiliate and American-British hospitals. Key Job Responsibilities
- Biomedical Equipment Maintenance and Repair: Conduct regular maintenance, calibration, and repairs of all electrical and mechanical equipment, ensuring it operates efficiently and safely. Perform preventive maintenance according to the manufacturer’s guidelines and company protocols. Troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues with dialysis machines, water treatment systems, and other medical equipment promptly to minimize downtime.
- Equipment Monitoring and Quality Assurance: Monitor the performance of all biomedical equipment and systems to ensure they meet regulatory standards and operational specifications. Conduct regular quality assurance checks and maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance and repairs. Implement and adhere to a comprehensive quality control program for all biomedical equipment.
- Water Treatment and Quality Testing: Oversee the operation and maintenance of water treatment systems, ensuring they meet all safety and quality standards. Conduct regular disinfection and testing of water quality according to protocol, including checking for contaminants and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Document and report water quality test results, addressing any issues promptly to prevent any impact on patient care. Implement and monitor protocols for water treatment system maintenance and quality assurance to ensure optimal performance. Provide training to staff on water treatment procedures and safety protocols to ensure consistent adherence to quality standards.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all dialysis equipment complies with local, state, and federal regulations and standards, including those set by the FDA, CMS, and other relevant bodies. Maintain up-to-date documentation and records to demonstrate compliance during inspections and audits.
- Clinic Operations Support: Assist with the overall operations of the clinic, including inventory management, supply ordering, and ensuring the availability of necessary medical supplies and equipment. Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to ensure smooth clinic operations and effective patient care delivery. Support patient scheduling, record-keeping, and other administrative tasks as needed to facilitate efficient clinic operations.
- Training and Education: Provide training and support to clinic staff on the proper use and maintenance of dialysis equipment. Develop and deliver educational programs for staff on equipment troubleshooting, safety protocols, and best practices in equipment management. Stay updated on the latest advancements in dialysis technology and integrate new knowledge into staff training programs.
- Emergency Preparedness and Response: Know all emergency equipment and emergency procedures. Improve and implement emergency response plans for equipment failures and other technical emergencies. Ensure that all clinic staff are trained in emergency procedures related to biomedical equipment. Respond promptly to emergency situations to minimize the impact on patient care and clinic operations.
- Patient Safety and Infection Control: Adhere to strict infection control protocols when servicing and maintaining dialysis equipment. Ensure that all equipment used in patient care is thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and safe for use. Monitor and report any potential safety hazards related to biomedical equipment. Responsible for overall handling and storage of medical waste.
- Data Management and Reporting: Maintain detailed records of all maintenance activities, equipment performance data, and incident reports. Report all significant problems to the Charge Nurse, Facility Administrator and Medical Director, as applicable. Prepare and present regular reports on equipment status, maintenance activities, and any identified issues to clinic management (QAPI). Utilize data to identify trends and areas for improvement in equipment management and clinic operations.
- Clinic Operations Assistance: Collaborate with clinic managers to ensure efficient day-to-day operations of hemodialysis clinics. Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of supplies and equipment when needed. Oversee facility maintenance and coordinate with external vendors for any required repairs or improvements. Help maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and company policies in clinic operations.
- Continuous Improvement: Participate in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing clinic operations, patient safety, and equipment efficiency. Collaborate with the clinical team to identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices. Contribute to the development and implementation of new policies and procedures to support clinic goals and objectives.

Qualifications:
- Educational Background: High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required). Associate Degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics, or a related field (Preferred). Relevant Certifications such as Certification as a Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) from AAMI, or similar certification, is highly desirable.
- Experience: At least 2-3 years of experience in maintaining and repairing medical equipment, preferably in a dialysis or healthcare setting. Specific experience with hemodialysis machines and water treatment systems is strongly preferred. Experience in an operational support role within a healthcare environment is beneficial.
- Technical skills: Proficiency in troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing biomedical equipment, especially dialysis machines and water treatment systems. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagrams.
- Communication Abilities: Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to train and educate clinic staff on equipment usage and maintenance.
- Problem Solving Aptitude: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail to identify issues, propose solutions, and make decisions independently or collaboratively. Ability to anticipate potential challenges and proactively implement preventive measures. Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail. Ability to conduct quality assurance tests and analyze data to ensure equipment performance and compliance. Ability to create a safe and efficient work environment, OSHA – 6S – Infection Control.
- Organizational Skills: Strong organizational abilities to manage inventory, schedule maintenance, and maintain accurate records. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.

- Physical Requirements: Ability to push/pull heavy equipment (~100 lbs) and occasionally lift/carry less heavy equipment (~50 lbs). Capacity to work in various positions, including standing, bending, and kneeling, for extended periods.
- Adaptability and Flexibility: Willingness to work flexible hours, including possible evenings or weekends, to ensure equipment availability and support clinic operations.
