Position: Orthopedic Certified Med-Surg Nurse

Position Summary
The Orthopedic Certified medical-surgical nurse delivers care to patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The position works collaboratively with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes, with a specialized focus on the orthopedic and spine surgery patient population. In addition to their medical-surgical duties, the Orthopedic Med-Surg Nurse will serve as a clinical expert, role model, and best-practice resource for teammates.
Position Responsibilities
Provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of the Med/Surg Nurse include (but are not limited to):
· Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans
· Prepares, administers, and documents the administration of prescribed medications.
· Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with policy
· Records and monitors vital signs and assessments, reporting abnormal findings to physicians
· Provides bedside care for a wide variety of medical patients, including pre- and post-surgery patients
· Initiates patient education plan. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury
· Changes dressings, inserts catheters, starts IVs, and performs other nursing tasks and procedures as ordered.
· Prepares equipment and aids physician during examination and treatment of patient
· Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing scope of practice and organizational policy and procedure
· Participates in discharge planning
· Utilizes time management skills
· Records all care information concisely, accurately, completely, and timely in the electronic medical record
· Performs other position-related duties as assigned
· Float among various clinical services, where qualified and competent
· Serves as an advocate for patient safety and evidence-based practice
· Works collaboratively with nursing and other interdisciplinary team members and fosters a positive work environment
Other Responsibilities
· Serve as an orthopedic/spine nursing clinical expert
· Work collaboratively with nursing leadership to identify education and training gaps regarding care of the ortho and spine patients
· Support education/training efforts related to improving care processes, delivery, and outcomes for ortho and spine patients
· Completes required orientation as directed by facility
· Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment
· Upholds HIPAA regulations
Position Requirements
· Unrestricted TX nursing license, or compact state license
· Nurse specialty certification in the area of orthopedic surgery (ONC preferred)
· Minimum of one (1) year Med/Surge experience, preferred
· Current ACLS certification required within 90 days of hire
Working Conditions
Because patients need round-the-clock care, working hours include days, nights, weekends and holidays. The position requires spending considerable time walking, bending, stretching, standing, and assisting in lifting/moving patients. May face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases; and treat patients that may be confused, irrational, agitated, and/or uncooperative.
Physical Demands
· Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds, as well as assist with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds.
