EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in nursing.
Knowledge of students with disabilities preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of public health.
Public school experience.
Active Michigan license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide nursing care of students and staff with minor and major illnesses and injuries.
Contact parents/guardians for students with sudden illnesses and injuries who need to be sent home for medical care.
Reporting, recording, collating and communicating to parents, staff and administrators on health problems accident/injury reports, insurance forms, emergency cards, and immunization data when appropriate.
Conduct a "walk-in" clinic for health counseling and referral resource information for students.
Collaborate with school counselors and administrators related to health care plans.
Arrange for appropriate documentation, authorization for dispensing of medications in the school setting.
When legally appropriate, delegate, train and supervise non-licensed lay staff to carry out certain nursing responsibilities, (e.g. dispensing of medication in the school setting, tube feeding).
Identify and plan for students with health problems.
Act as a consultant regarding immunization records.
Evaluate and plan for the adaptation of the environment for the student with disabilities.
Obtain and provide speakers and or materials on health education/prevention.
Conduct special education health evaluations and attend IEPC when appropriate.
Maintain records and reports.
Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance.
Other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Read, write and comprehend basic instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, parents, students and
administrators.
Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Add, subtract, and multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY:
Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Work with parents and children of diverse cultural backgrounds.
Develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.
Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
