Galveston Naval Museum
Position Title: General Manager/Executive Director
Reports to: Chairman & CEO, Cavalla Historical Foundation
The Cavalla Historical Foundation (CHF) is an IRS approved non-profit, 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to the preservation, restoration, & curation of the vessels and artifacts in its care. CHF is the operator of and does business as the Galveston Naval Museum. As such, the Executive Director is responsible for the oversight of the operation of the Museum.
Position Summary: The Executive Director will plan and coordinate museum activities such as the business operation, visitor educational experiences, military memorial ceremonies, and daily operations of the Galveston Naval Museum located at Seawolf Park in Galveston, TX.
Activities include but are not limited to:
- Support the CEO in execution of the overall vision of the Museum
- Support the development of a strong organizational culture which promotes cooperation, collaboration, & teamwork.
- Establishing & maintaining positive relationships with the local community and increasing awareness of the museum and its mission
- Establishing & Maintaining relationships with supporting organizations such as Texas A&M Maritime Academy, local museums & non-profits, donors, & other museums
- Active participation in industry associations such as the Historic Naval Ships Association, US Sub Veterans Assoc, Tin Can Sailors Assoc, etc.
Essential Job Tasks:
- Perform the duties of the chief administrator for the Museum; including managing the budget, payroll, donations, grants.
- Report to the CEO and represent the Museum at meetings, seminars, and training sessions and other events; Accurately prepare and present assigned reports
- Prepare and administer grants and other applications for funding/donations to the Museum.
- Maintain a collaborative working relationship with the Seawolf Park Manager to coordinate Museum activities related to the park grounds, facilities, visitors, events, etc.
- Coordinate with the Ship’s Superintendent to ensure that the donated Naval vessels and all other military displays and memorials are maintained in visitor-ready condition
- Actively conduct and pursue fund raising through donor cultivation, grants, capital campaigns, gift giving opportunities, store operations, etc.
- Perform record keeping and correspondence duties in an accurate, timely manner including, but not limited to, newsletters, web pages, membership/contributor databases, etc.
- Work with the Communications committee in developing and monitoring the Museum online presence
- Maintain custody, security, and management of the CHF artifact collection, and work closely with the Curation committee chair to identify and procure appropriate artifacts as they become available.
- Ensure that all staff and visitors adhere to applicable local, state and federal safety requirements
- Supervise employees as assigned.
- Actively recruit, train and develop volunteers and docents on a continual basis
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Working Conditions
- Full Time (40 hours/week) Workdays vary to meet job demands including weekends, holidays and special events
- Subject to 24 hour call for emergency response/crisis management
- Ascend and descend steep ladders on the Naval vessels on a routine basis to fulfill job duties
- Perform occasional manual labor to fulfill job duties including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 pounds
- Adhere to organizational dress and grooming standards
- Enforce a non-smoking environment on site
- Work effectively in outdoor settings including extremely hot temperatures and adverse weather conditions
- Within one month of hiring, must maintain a residence within 50 statute miles of Seawolf Park.
Skill Qualifications:
- Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and time-management skills
- Strong organizational skills in managing staff and prioritizing work consistent with business objectives; ability to translate strategic vision into actionable goals
- Project Management experience
- Ability to represent the Museum to the public and external stakeholders such as city government, veterans associating meetings, etc.
- Must clear a background check.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Business or Management/Strategic Planning-Operations or relevant professional experience plus five years of management experience required
- Previous museum experience a plus
- Entrepreneurial, fundraising, or grant writing experience preferred.
- Technology/Computer literacy a must. Ability to manage and create electronic technology tools for organizational improvements highly preferred.
- Knowledge of military/naval history, customs and courtesies strongly preferred.
