Payroll Specialist Summary
The Payroll Specialist is accountable and responsible for payroll production and tax-related
issues; verifies totals, responds to/resolves questions and problems, and delivers quality
customer service. The position also requires a commitment to providing a high level of service,
following safety rules, federal and state laws and regulations, and always representing the
company professionally and courteously.
Role and Responsibilities
- Prepare payroll biweekly by compiling, verifying and calculating hours, and resolving
discrepancies.
- Respond to employee inquiries regarding the amount and receipt of the checks and any
other payroll questions.
- Maintain and update new and terminated employee data as needed.
- Compile payroll data such as garnishments, vacation time, insurance, etc.
- Poll electronic time clocks and review the downloaded information for completeness and
accuracy
- Contact employees for any missing information
- Process transfer of payroll data to the payroll system
- Pull payroll management reports from the payroll software system
- Prepare and enter certified payroll
- Calculate fringes and update prevailing wage rates
-Update prevailing wage rates and jobs in payroll software
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- High School Diploma or two or more years of office-related experience and training or
equivalent combination of education and experience; college degree is highly preferred
- Solid understanding of payroll and payroll tax laws required
- Experience with certified payroll
- Experience with Paychex payroll platform
- Proven facility in MS Office (especially Excel), data entry, and office equipment (e.g.,
telephone, headset, 10-key or calculator, computer, FAX machine, printer/copier)
- Proven facility in customer service and problem resolution
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent organizational, planning, and prioritization skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
Compensation
Approximately 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, First shift. The hourly rate ranges
from $15 to $20 per hour, depending on experience.
