About Better Futures
Better Futures Minnesota was founded as a network of support for men, primarily African American men, who were formerly incarcerated. The network model provides access to health care, housing, life skills coaching and employment. These four fundamental supports provide a base which builds community.
Better Futures Minnesota offers a 12-month community model of integrated services designed to address trauma and mental health issues, racial and economic disparities, poverty and homelessness as chronic public health issues that disproportionately affect the men we serve. Our Workforce Development model intentionally employs staff with lived experience as BIPOC or formerly incarcerated.
Our Mission
Better Futures Minnesota mission is to fuel and guide men's desire to turn their lives around and walk a new path toward better health and success. Our work seeks to end the cycle of intergenerational poverty for the men we serve by supporting the economic and social success of participants, enabling them to contribute to their families and communities. With new skills and work history, our participants can secure long-term employment and increase their engagement as fathers and community members.
Better Futures Minnesota embraces a population of men who are locked out of society, living in chronic poverty with histories of incarceration, persistent unemployment, untreated mental illness, addiction, and homelessness. One hundred percent (100%) of the men that we serve are justice system-involved with felony criminal records and are currently on Probation/Parole.
Employment is the single most important factor in determining recidivism rates for previously incarcerated people.
Since 2007, Better Futures MN has engaged more than 1,600 at-risk men and employed 900 of these men, awarded over 3,000 certifications.
Our Vision
We are an Enterprise that is bigger and more ambitious than a program and is part of an ambitious enterprise that initiates, promotes and protects Environmental Stewardship. We are building a movement that supports personal transformation and a healthy, vibrant community of men.
We believe in second chances, and for the men we serve, that means the opportunity to become productive citizens, engaged fathers, employees, and neighbors.
Since 2007, Better Futures Minnesota’s unique model has helped men realize their potential for success and become responsible members of the community who earn wages, pay taxes and child support, and are self-sufficient and engaged in building their own success stories.
Work matters
Work and a reliable job have deep practical and intrinsic values—values offered to each participant in Better Futures through the opportunity to build valuable job and life skills to help them build their own success stories. Our social enterprise has been recognized locally and nationally as an exemplary model that creates jobs while protecting the environment and solving some of society’s toughest challenges.
