Summary:
Responsible for dispatching loads in an orderly, safe, and efficient manner to arrive at destinations on a timely schedule.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Directly supervises drivers, driver trainers, driver trainees and helpers in the Transportation Department.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and discipling employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work area.
- Maintain adherence to company policies, safety standards, and good housekeeping practices.
- Coordinate dispatch of routes, drivers, helpers, and trucks each night.
- Make out trip sheets.
- Issue com-checks for fuel, overweight tickets, overnight money, etc.
- Call drivers and helpers that have not reported at dispatch time.
- Document attendance in TAAT program.
- Enter all loads dispatched into the computer.
- Make sure correct trip sheets are with loads.
- Keep log file up to date.
- Total log hours each week and check for DOT violations.
- Keep total hours for helpers on timecard.
- Counsel drivers and helpers about paperwork, customer problems, truck problems, attendance, etc.
- Work on billing whenever necessary to determine if split loads are required.
- Move stops around monitoring cube and weight.
- Set-up B loads whenever necessary.
- Maintain daily records of drivers, helpers, and equipment availability.
- Do Saturday billing whenever necessary.
- Answer multi-line phone system addressing customer complaints and driver issues.
- Must be able to assist drivers with verbal directions to locations.
- Notify customers of late loads.
- Trained in first aid and CPR.
- End of shift documentation- trucks and trailers on the yard, pump reading, etc.
- Trained to administer DOT Alcohol Testing.
- Follow up to ensure drivers and helpers report for drug testing as scheduled.
- Complete accident reports thoroughly including pictures of the vehicle.
- Deal with Penske Personnel in reference to trucks and trailers on hold and schedule for repair.
- Keep updated messages and motel list for each route.
- Assists security guard with issues that arise during the evening and night shift.
- Various other jobs and special projects as needed.
Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:
- Two (2) years prior experience in the transportation field or prior supervisor/ lead experience.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Certificates, License, Registration:
Computer Skills:
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of GSC Billing, Payroll Systems, Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
Other Qualifications:
- Thorough knowledge of office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Knowledge of DOT rules and regulations.
- Strong leadership, communication, and self-motivated.
