Are you tired of being cooped up in a building all day? Are you sick of busting your butt every day but never catching up to the seemingly endless stream of patients? Do you crave real relationships with clients and pets?
Have we got an opportunity for you!
Enjoy working in a privately owned veterinary practice that was started by a stubborn woman hellbent on proving that this profession can be fun, rewarding, and profitable. Dr. Meghan Ellis got what she wanted and vowed to spread the joy as far as possible.
We hired a fantastic veterinarian for our Cary, NC location and she needs a fabulous assistant to help her throughout the day.
About Family Veterinary Mobile Clinic
We are a house call only practice that provides preventive care, chronic disease management, and behavior medicine to dogs and cats in the Sanford/Southern Pines areas of NC. We are expanding the practice to Cary, Apex, and Holly Springs. We plan to have multiple vets working in multiple areas of NC to start, then to continue expanding WITHOUT VENTURE CAPITALIST OR CORPORATE OVERLORDS to different areas of the country. Family Veterinary Mobile Clinic will always be a closely held private company.
Our company also provides dog and cat training and pet sitting services. We want to add grooming to the mix eventually. You will not be involved with any of this except to recommend those services to clients who could benefit from them. We currently do surgery once a month but we are not renewing our lease agreement so you won't ever need to assist with anesthesia for our company. This area is blessed with wonderful urgent care, emergency, and specialty practices. We have local practices who take care of our patients for dentistry, non-specialty surgery, etc.
We do not perform non-patient euthanasia.
Our core value is we are committed to happy healthy relationships. What that means for you is:
- We are open and honest in all of our communications. You will have regular meetings with your manager, meetings for the development and updating of medical protocols, and company meetings. All of our strategies, company documentation, projects, SOPs, employee handbooks, and meeting notes are available on Monday.com.
- We are Fear Free Certified and practice according to those principles at all times. We understand and respect what a fearful pet is telling us and make changes accordingly. We never manhandle or forcefully restrain pets. We expect you to use a lot of PVP, sedation, chemical restraint, and referrals to our behaviorist for the mental and emotional health of the pet and for your own safety.
- Your work schedule is Monday-Wednesday 9 am to 4 pm. You'll see appointments 10 am to 3 pm with an hour lunch from noon until 1 pm. There is a good chance we'll add Thursday to the schedule soon.
- We are sticklers for safety. If you or your veterinarian feel unsafe for any reason (for example a client refuses sedation for a fear aggressive pet) fire the client and leave or hang up (if they are being abusive on the phone).
- We value your privacy and time off. We do not bug you on your time off except for an emergency (ie, your vet is in the hospital; we're sending someone else to work with you tomorrow).
- You have quality time off for self-care and hobbies and to develop and nurture your personal relationships. We have a 3 or 4-day work week. We are off evenings, weekends, and whatever holidays you celebrate. You get 4 weeks PTO to start, 6 weeks after 3 years with us, and 8 weeks after 10 years.
- We support your professional and personal development. Dr. Meghan provides coaching to help you with this. We also have an unlimited CE budget- learn whatever makes sense for the growth of the company. Your CE time off does NOT count against your PTO. We promote from within. If you are interested in other positions in our company, your coaching sessions and hard work may help you get the job you want.
- We provide a health insurance stipend and a broker so you can get the best health care possible.
- We invest in your future by matching your 401k contributions 100% up to 6% of your salary (FT); a prorated percentage for part time.
- We respect our team's knowledge and experience. Our medical protocols are developed and updated by the people working in the field- veterinarians. You are responsible for helping us update our protocols regularly so we don't become old-school or whenever new diagnostics or therapies are developed. For example, we updated our feline and canine arthritis protocols ahead of schedule due to the introduction of Solensia and Librela. Of course, that also means you are responsible for delivering the highest quality care possible to every patient by following our protocols.
- Many of our patients have behavior problems, including aggression. We sedate a LOT of patients for routine care. We do NOT manhandle patients at all for any reason. If the pet seems fearful or anxious, tell your veterinarian to stop and come up with a different plan.
Your Day
You and your veterinarian will start by packing the vehicle for the day. Supplies are located at the doctor's house (including controlled drugs). We provide all of the bags, coolers, a small fridge for the vaccines, etc. You can work it out with your veterinarian who drives and whose vehicle you use. We pay mileage. We schedule our appointments back to back with the understanding that you don't need all the time allocated for each appointment so it includes drive time to the next home. We schedule an hour for lunch breaks. We schedule so you aren't driving more than 20 minutes between homes, typically 10 minutes.
You and your veterinarian take what you need into the client's home. We have clients corral their pets so they are accessible ahead of time. You'll listen to the doctor get a history and prepare all the vaccines, lab work supplies, etc. so everything is ready when the doctor is done with the history. You'll spin down blood samples in the client's home before you leave. Fecal samples are saved until the end of the day, and we run them in the doctor's home. You'll read the fecal tests and enter the results in Ezyvet. Besides regular appointments, you may occasionally have to drop off medications or written prescriptions or pick up lab samples from clients. You take payment at the time of service.
At the end of the day, you and your veterinarian drop off send out labs at the UPS Store. Then you unpack the vehicle and run fecal tests. Finish the records with fecal tests and send the client their clinical summaries. Wait for send-out lab results to be available the next day to email those clinical summaries.
We carry a very limited pharmacy. Most prescriptions (all preventatives) are sent through our online pharmacy. We can also provide written scripts for clients to pick up at a local pharmacy. We do not call in prescriptions as that is an unmitigated disaster.
The packing and unpacking of the vehicle adds about 30 minutes to the beginning and end of the day. You'll also have to consider drive time to your first appointment and after the last one to your home. My RVT gets to my house an hour before the first appointment to pack the vehicle and give us time to drive to the first appointment. At the end of the day, I'm done working within an hour of the last appointment ending (including driving home, unpacking, and finishing whatever records/emails).
