Job Summary
The Behavioral Support Specialist will provide emotional, behavioral, educational and counseling support to students displaying inappropriate, maladaptive or oppositional behavior in the classroom that impedes learning. The Behavioral Support Specialist will maintain a close working relationship with the Academy leadership team, and the other members of the educational staff to ensure optimal support and supervision for Academy students.
Job Responsibilities
This position requires a bachelors’ degree in social work, psychology, education, juvenile justice, counseling or applicable human services field or 5 years experience working in a position congruent with the particular requirements this position demands. A minimum of two years of experience working with “at risk” youth. He/she must be over 21 years of age, have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. He/she must demonstrate the ability to present the Agency in the community in a positive and appropriate manner. He/she must demonstrate the leadership, knowledge, skills and abilities to carry out the goals and objectives of HopeTree Academy. Knowledge of crisis management, school/educational process, and in adolescent behavior, crisis counseling skills and mental health issues are required.
Job Requirements
1 Develops a good professional relationship with all students in order to help them with school concerns, adjustment problems, making effective decisions and setting realistic goals.
2 Supervises students on arrival, lunch, and on departure from school.
3 Supervises students during transitions.
4 Provides behavior management support to teachers such as observing and charting student behavior.
5 Provides positive reinforcement and support to teachers in managing student behavior in the classroom, lab, etc..
6 Manages conflicts between students.
7 Provides close supervision for students with behavior problems.
8 Circulates in the classroom to provide academic and behavioral support where needed and as appropriate.
9 Co-teach given classes where appropriate.
10 Ensures class and school rules are followed.
11 Removes "out of control" or hostile students from the classroom to a "timeout" environment to allow them to regain control/composure. At last resort, use T.O.V.A. techniques if necessary.
- Provides support to students to help them gain coping and self-regulation skills.
-Re-enter students into their regular classroom after regaining composure and counseling.
12 Document discipline and class removal incidents on appropriate reports and communication documents, media, etc.
13 Communicates with educators, social workers, and parents the student's behavior incidents, consequences, etc. as directed by the Director of Education and Education Supervisor.
14 Participates on field trips as directed by the Director of Education and Educational Supervisor, for the purpose of providing student behavioral support.
15 Participates on I.E.P./I.S.D.P./I.S.P. Behavior Support Plan, Student Support, Admissions and MDT meetings to give behavior data, reports, etc.., on various students and in developing effective educational/treatment plans.
16 Meets with designated staff person for behavioral counseling intervention strategies with students.
17 Attends training and workshops in order to enhance abilities and as required for the positions' minimum qualifications or by HTFS.
18 Accepts consequences for actions. Prompt in meeting deadlines and following through on student behavioral plans, reports, etc.
19 Demonstrates the ability to work with supervisors and fellow educators to accomplish desired results by using tact, cooperation, teamwork, and communication skills; keeps appropriate people informed; compliant and supportive of established policies and procedures; understanding and supportive of HopeTree's Mission.
20 Follows all Agency policies.
21 Meets with students and/or teachers as directed during the school daily schedule.
22 Performs other duties assigned .
23 Follows Agency dress code.
