Position Summary:
Industrial Asphalt Paving Operators will operate one or more pieces of construction equipment such as but not limited to asphalt pavers, asphalt screeds, dual drum and pneumatic rollers, milling machines, distributor trucks, water trucks, motorized brooms, excavators, front-end loaders, track loaders, and skid-steers to place and level hot mix asphalt paving materials, and load and haul materials. They will also be responsible for safety, equipment inspections, and possibly assisting with repairs. The position will be expected to assist other crafts in their down times which may include non-operating activities.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years Industrial Construction Experience
- Minimum of 2 years Industrial Journeyman Asphalt Paving Equipment Operator Experience
- Must be able to read and interpret prints, drawings and plans
- Must be able to read and interpret elevations, grade stakes and survey data
- Knowledge of Industrial Asphalt Paving Equipment Operator skills and operating abilities
- Knowledge of road construction materials, methods and processes and industry requirements.
- Understanding of computerized controls and electronics used in asphalt grade control equipment
- Knowledge of equipment inspection, maintenance, lubrication and regular servicing
- Must be able to meet all physical demands and pre-employment conditions
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must be able to work up to 7 days per week and the hours necessary in order to achieve the goals of the company and the project
Position Responsibilities:

- Ensures that any unsafe acts or conditions are reported to your immediate supervisor immediately to avoid accident or injury
- Must work efficiently, productively and safely without error and consistently meet the productions goals as set by the Foreman, Superintendent or Project Manager.
- Examines blue prints, sketches, building plans and specifications to determine site layout, design specifications, material required, existing utilities, and required paving depths and dimensions
- Must have knowledge of the proper use of equipment, materials and supplies used in heavy construction
- Performs daily inspection of each tool or piece of equipment that they operate to ensure that the tools and equipment are safe and fit for duty; prior to utilizing the equipment
- Performs regular servicing and maintenance of equipment to ensure that each piece of equipment is fit for duty.
- Provide recommendations for maintaining and improving performance of equipment to supervision and Mason equipment managers and mechanics
- Ensure company equipment and material is maintained, kept cleaned, and stored in a safe manner
- Check filters and grease equipment
- Load and unload equipment from vehicles and trailers
- Properly selects and operates equipment specific to each job task
- Inspects all designated work areas for hazards and obstructions
- Operate the paver, screed and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Ensure that the paving screed is preheated before placement of asphalt and monitor temperature settings of the asphalt mixture.
- Operate all components of the paving machine such as the screed, augers, hopper, etc.
- Ensure alignment of the paver and paving train to the work area and ensure the proper application of asphalt, smoothing it evenly to the desired length, width and depth. Ensure proper joint construction and tie in to curb and gutter, drains, etc.
- Clean all equipment thoroughly and flush at the end of each shift or periodically throughout the day as required.
- Uses and follows crane/equipment rigging hand signals to rig, load, transport and unload material and/or equipment
- Will operate various pieces of construction equipment to move soils, aggregates and other materials in precision processes.
- Will operate various pieces of construction equipment to load, haul, transport, dump and unload specific construction materials and equipment as needed for the work scope.
- Will work closely with material delivery subcontractors and vendors to stage equipment properly for loading and unloading.
- Will communicate with material suppliers and dump truck operators to ensure safe transport, loading and dumping of materials
- Must work closely with testing laboratory technicians to effectively establish compaction of materials
- Must be able to handle and operate small tools (hammers, wrenches, and power tools) and become proficient
- Will maintain housekeeping and an orderly site as work tasks are performed
- Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules.
- May lead Jobsite Safety Analysis (JSA) meetings
- Follows direction from supervisor
- Will provide assistance to other crafts and supervision
- Performs other duties as required

- Must be able to work in the limited access areas of an industrial setting that require precise control of equipment to avoid damage to property, equipment or personnel.
- Must be able to follow instructions correctly
- Must be reliable, accountable, and consistent in performing administrative processes such as but not limited to equipment inspection paperwork.
- Must be willing and able to follow all instructed safety regulations.
- Must be able to make it to work on time and work the designated schedule and any overtime as needed with the proper notification.
- Minimum skills and/or education requirements may be modified and/or waived by Mason Construction management at any time.
Valued but not required skills and experience:
- Former Mason Construction employee
- Formal education/degree/certificate in construction, technical or trade school
- National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certification
- Excavation Competent Person training for shoring
- Surveying capabilities
- Basic computer competency
Physical demands:
- Employee must maintain physical condition appropriate for the performance of their assigned duties.
- Must be able to climb, bend, stoop, squat, sit, kneel, stand, walk and work on rough terrain, work at heights, lift overhead as well as push and pull.
- Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Employee will be required to adhere to large amounts of sitting, standing, walking, bending, squatting and lifting.
- Employees will also be required to sit for long periods of time for training related to safety, quality, leadership, work practice, and site specific issues.
- Must be able to sit for extended periods of time behind a computer.
- Will talk and listen to communicate.
- Must be able to hear, understand and follow instructions correctly.
- Will use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, and pull objects, materials, controls and tools.
- May be required to lift, carry and move up to 80lbs.
- Will occasionally work at heights, climb ladders and stairways and work off of platforms. Must maintain 3 point contact.

- Will use vision abilities to focus, see short and long distances, colors, depth perception and peripheral vision.
- Must be able to use fingers in precise coordinated movements.

Work environment:
- Due to the nature of most construction projects, the majority of the work will not be shielded from the impacts of weather. Weather will range from warm to extremely hot and usually humid. Occasional cool/cold days and rain. Dusty and muddy conditions may be frequent. At times work will be conducted on uneven terrain, at heights, and near or over water. Noise levels will be moderate to high. Job site will contain light to heavy equipment, vehicles, materials and tools. People in the surrounding areas will be standing, walking, sitting, signaling, working and talking. Bells, horns, whistles and alarms may sound to alert personnel.
